The legend of Phil Ivey transcends not only the WSOP but the game of poker itself. A professional gambler who got his start as a teenager in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Ivey went from sleeping under docks to becoming the person many consider the greatest poker player alive.
Winning his first WSOP bracelet at the 2000 WSOP in the $2,500 Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) tournament, Ivey has gone on to win 11 bracelets throughout his career, the second most all-time behind only Phil Hellmuth (17).
With a wide array of accolades from the WSOP and other major tournament series, Ivey’s tournament success is rivaled only by his legendary status in high-stakes cash games.
One of the most popular poker players to appear in televised poker games like High Stakes Poker and Poker After Dark, Ivey’s performance at the highest stakes is the stuff of legend.
In 2006, Ivey famously played on behalf of “The Corporation”, a collective of professional poker players who took turns facing billionaire Andy Beal heads-up with the stakes as high as $50,000/$100,000. Over the course of three days at the Wynn in Las Vegas, Ivey won over $16 million from Beal.
An idol for many recreational and professional poker players, Ivey has continued his poker career, collecting trophies and competing at the highest stakes.
