The World Series of Poker® is the largest, richest and most prestigious gaming event and poker brand in the world, having awarded more than $4 billion in prize money over the past six decades. Welcoming thousands to the famous Las Vegas Strip and hosting poker tournaments around the world, every year players from all over build their legacies at WSOP events.
Serving as the biggest stage for legends like Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, and Phil Hellmuth, the WSOP has long been the place where players become poker icons.
Broadcast to the world on ESPN, CBS, and now PokerGO, the WSOP has drawn more viewership and global prominence to the game of poker than any other entity.
The longest running and most prestigious annual poker tournament in history, the $10,000 WSOP Main Event serves as the featured event of every WSOP, and remains the most important poker event to take place every year.
Our Story

Created by famous casino magnate Benny Binion who was inspired by the early legends of the game, the first-ever World Series of Poker (WSOP) took place in 1970 at the Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The first WSOP was played by seven of the greatest poker players of the time: Johnny Moss, "Amarillo Slim" Preston, Sailor Roberts, Doyle Brunson, Puggy Pearson, Crandell Addington, and Carl Cannon.
Taking part in a cash game, at the end of play the seven players were tasked with voting on who they felt was the best poker player in the game. Famously, each player initially voted for themselves.
After being instructed to vote a second time on who they felt was the next best player in the game, Johnny Moss was declared the first-ever WSOP Main Event champion, and would go on to win the title again the very next year, and again in 1974.
At the 2nd WSOP, the event expanded to five tournaments across various poker games, and has continued to grow in size as the WSOP and the game of poker has grown in global prominence.
Today, around 100 bracelet events take place at the WSOP every summer.

In 2003, accountant Chris Moneymaker would win the WSOP Main Event for $2,500,000 after winning his seat through a $86 buy-in online satellite tournament. Witnessing Moneymaker’s historic win on ESPN, thousands of people around the world were inspired to take up the game of poker, and in turn attend the WSOP.
Referred to today as the “Moneymaker Effect” as well as the “Poker Boom”, the early 2000’s saw the WSOP and the game of poker grow in popularity that has maintained an impact still present to this day.
Helping spur the popularity of not only live but also online poker, the Moneymaker Effect led to historic traffic for online poker rooms around the world.
On WSOP.com as well as GGPoker, players in Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and internationally compete for WSOP bracelets and Circuit rings.
In 2004, Harrah’s Entertainment (now owned by Caesars Entertainment) purchased Binion's Horseshoe and retained the rights to the WSOP and Horseshoe brands.
Leaving its original home and setting up shop just off the Las Vegas Strip in 2005 , the WSOP would be hosted at the Rio Hotel and Casino until moving to the current host properties, Caesars Entertainment’s Horseshoe and Paris, in 2022.
In 2005, the WSOP launched the World Series of Poker Circuit, a year-long tournament series that brought lower stakes WSOP tournaments to players around the United States and the world.
As the game of poker continued to grow in global prominence in the early 2000’s, in 2007 the first-ever WSOP Europe was held in London, England. Winning the first-ever WSOP Europe Main Event, Norwegian poker player Annette Obrestadt not only received £1,000,000, but became the youngest WSOP bracelet winner in history at the age of 18.

Every year, hundreds of WSOP and WSOP Circuit events are held around the world, representing the global reach of the game.
Held at Caesar’s Horseshoe and Paris since 2022, the WSOP welcomes thousands of poker players all over the world to the Las Vegas Strip every year with dreams of winning a WSOP bracelet.
In 2024, the WSOP brand was acquired by NSUS Group Inc. (GGPoker), marking a new chapter in the platform’s development. This acquisition further strengthened the WSOP’s global reach and brand influence.
