#12 - Tom McEvoy
Tom McEvoy has found more success as a writer than a poker player, which should not cheapen the four time bracelet winner’s poker resume. McEvoy has thirteen poker books in print including the Championship series that he co-wrote with Poker Hall of Famer T.J. Cloutier. He is a regular columnist and has also shared a book with Linda Johnson.
Before McEvoy became of the most prolific and successful poker writers he researched his topic on the felt. He entered his first WSOP bracelet in 1983 in a Limit Hold’em event. Astoundingly, he won his second bracelet only six days later which happened to be the Main Event. He became the first Main Event Champ in history win his seat through a satellite.
He won his third bracelet in a 1986 Razz event. He won his final bracelet to date in 1992 in Limit Omaha. McEvoy has made the final table in more than half of his WSOP cashes, a respectable 20 final tables out of 36 cashes. He has since cashed one other time in the Main Event. He managed a 371st place in the record smashing 2006 8,773 player Main Event, which is a top 4% finish.
Initially McEvoy was an accountant and only turned to poker as a career after he was laid off. He moved to Las Vegas in 1979 and immersed himself in all aspects of the game. His strategic discussions with T.J. Cloutier have produced some of the best strategy based poker books on the market. McEvoy is also responsible for changinig the WSOP to nonsmoking, by promising lessons to Benny Binion Behnen. McEvoy still continues to write and gives poker lessons.
