THE DAILY SHUFFLE: TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2012
Photo Caption (Photo by Jay WhoJedi Newnum):  If you love poker, it doesn’t get much better than this.  On Monday night, poker fans everywhere were treated to a rare dream-team matchup, when the two biggest stars in the game – the two “Phils” -- battled it out for a gold bracelet at the $10,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. final table.  However, the much anticipated short-handed match between the two superstars never materialized.  Hellmuth went out fourth.  Ivey busted fifth.  The real stars of the day were the three actual gold bracelet winners, all familiar names to poker fans.  David "Bakes" Baker won his second gold bracelet, by burning Ivey, Hellmuth and the others.  Earlier in the day, Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman won the largest Seniors World Championship in poker history and broke the curse of non-female winners in open gender events at the WSOP.  And the memorable night ended with Carter Phillips winning his second gold bracelet as well, defeating 2009 World Champion Joe Cada in heads-up play.  Indeed, this will be tough day to top in terms of thrilling moments.  To see more photos from the 2012 WSOP, please visit the official WSOP PHOTO BLOG.

ALLYN JAFFREY WINS RECORD-SMASHING VICTORY IN LARGEST SENIORS EVENT OF ALL TIME

The notable tidbits from this year’s Seniors World Championship were overwhelming.  A number of new records were set in this historic event won by Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman from Las Vegas, including the following:

1. Largest Seniors World Championship in history – at 4,128 entrants (broke the previous high mark set last year, which was 3,752 players

2. Largest starting single-day of any poker tournament in history – broke all previous records, including the 2006 WSOP Main Event numbers (largest live poker tournament of all time).

3. Biggest field in poker tournament history with a female champion – broke the previous high mark set by Liv Boree in 2010 in Sanremo, Italy (which was 1,240 entrants).

4. Streak of 249 consecutive gold bracelet events (Ladies Event excluded) without a female winner broken – until this day, no female had won a gold bracelet in an open event since Vanessa Selbst in 2008.

5. First time in history that a husband-wife-son trio made WSOP final table appearances in the same year – Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman (1st in Event #29), Jeff Shulman (3rd in Event #20), Barry Shulman (8th in Event #19).

FILLED UP WITH PHILS AT THE WSOP

It’s getting to the point where anytime there’s a WSOP final table to be played, just go ahead and reserve one seat for a guy named Phil.  At least one player by the name – Phil Ivey or Phil Hellmuth – is likely to show up.

At Monday’s $10,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. tournament, Ivey and Hellmuth met at the same final table together for the first time in seven years.  The last occasion when the two Phils sat together in a final session with a gold bracelet on the on the line was back in 2005 ($5,000 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha).  Ivey finished first, and Hellmuth took eighth.

This time, the outcome was reversed, in part – although neither player was ultimately pleased with the result.  Hellmuth ended up in fourth place, while Ivey finished fifth.

Stealing the spotlight was David “Bakes” Baker, who won his second career gold bracelet.

DAVID “BAKES” BAKER COOKS THE HORSE FINAL TABLE AND BURNS HELLMUTH, IVEY, MONNETTE, AND OTHERS

David Baker was the winner of the $10,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. championship (Event #32).  He topped one of the toughest and most experienced fields ever assembled for any WSOP event.  Six of the nine final table players were former gold bracelet winners.

Baker is a 25-year-old professional poker player from Las Vegas, NV.  He enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2010, when he final tabled the $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship, finishing sixth.  Baker followed up that performance with a win in the $10,000 buy-in Deuce-to-Seven Lowball event – good for his first gold bracelet.

Baker is a dedicated poker pro who started playing seriously while in college.  He gradually improved to the point he was making a living at the game, mostly toiling away in online poker games.  Baker now plays in some of the biggest and toughest cash games in the world.
