Tournament Notes:

  • A star-studded field of 451 players entered the first event of the 2007 World Series of Poker, presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light. However, eight of the nine finalists will be playing for a first-ever WSOP gold bracelet.
  • The current chip leader is Fred Berger, from the New Orleans area. His starting chip count is 942,000. He is the only prior WSOP event winner of the final nine. He won a pot-limit hold’em championship back in 2002.
  • Two Canadian players are ranked 2 and 3 in the starting chip count. Currently ranked second, Steve Paul Ambrose won $1.3 million at a January 2006 poker tournament held in The Bahamas.
  • Greg Mueller, aka “FBT” was the chip leader at end of Day One. He arrives at the final table ranked third in chips. The Canadian poker player has cashed seven times at the WSOP. His best showing was seventh-place in 2005.
  • Johnny Chan’s bid for a record 11th WSOP gold bracelet fell short. Despite some movement up the chip leader on Day Two, Chan ultimately busted out in 31st place. He remains tied with Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth, Jr. on the all-time wins list – with ten each.
  • All of the six women from Day One busted out on the second day, including Sabyl Cohen, the highest female finisher in the 2006 main event, last year. She finished just out of the money in this event. Two ladies did cash – Cyndy Violette (45th) and Millie Shio (41st).
  • This is one of the few times that a mixed hold’em tournament has been held at the WSOP. Interestingly, play tended to be more aggressive during the “limit” segments of the tournament. Although “no-limit” is generally considered a more volatile game, the escalating levels and multi-way action of “limit” play tended to crate larger pots and more chip movement than the “no-limit” rounds.
  • Play resumes on Sunday, June 3rd at 3 pm PST. ESPN will tape play at the final table for later broadcast.
