There is no question that the numbers for the World Series of Poker side events has gone from strength to strength, but the proof was in the pudding today after the 2011 WSOP $1,000 No Limit Hold'em Ladies Championship brought in a solid 1,055 players, including names like Vanessa Selbst, Liv Boeree, Melanie Weisner, Leo Margetts, Jennifer Tilly, Lauren Kling and Maria Ho.
The French launched a massive assault on this title, with defending champion Vanessa Hellebuyck leading the charge along with Almira "ChessBaby" Skripchenko and Celine Bastian.
The poker media were also out in force today, featuring PokerNews' own Lynn Gilmartin, Kristy Arnett and Elissa Harwood, as well as Gloria Balding, Rebecca McAdam, Kara Scott, Jess Welman, Melissa Castello and Kirsty Chick.
Many of the "old school" were also in attendance, including Linda Johnson, Barbara Enright, Cyndy Violette and Susie Issacs. And although none of these leading ladies will be back tomorrow for Day 2, it doesn't matter – the spirit in which the game was played was outstanding and all should be commended for their sportsmanship and goodwill.
Still, we have ourselves 137 players coming back tomorrow and all eyes will be on Ruby Du, who tops our chip counts with 67,800 in chips. Following closely behind is Carol Tomlinson with 63,800, while Crystal Sloan (58,000), Pamela Roberts (57,200) and Xiu Deng (54,900).
Other names to be returning for Day 2 include Shola Akindele (52,200), Yu Kurita (51,000), Gretchen "The Dragon Lady" Bremmer (43,400), Melanie Banfield (42,000), Karina Jett (30,600), Esther Bonding (20,400), Michelle "Sassy" Richey (20,300) and Alexandra Petitjean (17,500).
Ladies and gentlemen, this concludes our broadcast day. We'll resume our coverage of this event tomorrow at 2.30pm PST (GMT -7) so until then, this is PokerNews signing off – ciao for now!

The tournament staff just announced that each of the remaining tables will play six more hands before calling it a night.

We happened by Table 3 and discovered Lisa Parsons all in for 7,600 and up against Maria Mayrinck.
Parsons:
Mayrinck:
It was a classic race situation that saw Mayrinck take the lead on the flop. Parsons was on the verge of elimination, but the spiked on the turn to assure her the double. The inconsequential was put out on the river as Parsons doubled to 15,000. Mayrinck was left with just 5,200.

Erica Schoenberg has been running her table all day, as she has consistently been upping her chip stack throughout the day. We just caught a brief glimpse of what it looks like life has been like for the ladies over at her table. Action folded all the way around to the small blind, who put out a raise of 2,000. Her mistake was, it was Schoenberg's big blind. She was having none of it, as she counted out a raise to 8,000, and slid it into the center. The small blind tanked for a couple minutes before letting her hand go. Schoenberg is up to 40,000 after that hand, and is setting herself up for a great end to the night.

We feel bad we didn't find her sooner, but we just ran into Lisa Parsons over on Table 3. Parsons has four cashes at the WSOP totaling $108,432, including two deep runs in the Ladies Championship.
- 33rd in the 2007 WSOP Ladies Championship ($6,202)
- 76th in the 2008 $10,000 Main Event ($77,200)
- 7th in the 2009 WSOP Ladies Championship ($22,880)
- 331st in the 2010 Event #3 $1,000 NLHE ($2,150)
Parsons is looking to make her second Ladies Championship final table, although she faces an uphill battle as she is sitting on a short stack of 8,000.

With the action slowing down as we tick ever closer to the end of the nigh (and the bubble), the action has slowed to a crawl, but we did manage to pick up a small pot with Halli Pinson.
The action folded around to an opponent in the hijack position who raised to 1,800 before the flop; Pinson flat-called from the small blind, then checked her option after the dealer spread the flop of . The hijack c-bet 1,400, but Pinson quickly check-raised to 4,000 straight.
The hijack laid down her hand and Pinson is now up to 17,000.
Halli Pinson | 17,000 | 8,500 |
Friday, July 1, 2011 11:46 PM Local Time
Gretchen Brummer raised to 2,500 from under-the-gun and action folded around to the player on the button, who called. Both blinds folded.
The flop came and Brummer checked to her opponent, who announced she was all in for 12,000.
Brummer tanked for a little while and then called, revealing .
"Do you have queens?" Brummer asked.
"A flush draw," her opponent answered, tabling the .
The turn and river bricked and Brummer's opponent was eliminated.
"Sorry hun," Brummer offered. "I couldn't lay down the aces."
Brummer is up to 45,000.
Gretchen Brummer | 45,000 | 10,000 |
Friday, July 1, 2011 11:37 PM Local Time
Action folded to Amanda Musumeci in the hijack and she put in a raise to 1,900. The button was the only player to make the call and it was heads up to the flop. Musumeci wasted little time in continuation betting 2,500. The button folded and Musumeci took down the pot. She is up to 28,000.

Just before the break we lost Michele Lewis. Her demise came when she was all in preflop holding against the of her opponent. The board ran out and Lewis made her exit late in Level 9.

Players are now on a 20-minute break so the tournament staff can race off the green T25 chips. When they return, one more level will be played before calling it a night.

Ought of pure curiosity, we decided to do a lap around the room and do a quick head count . . . as to how many players are wearing hats. With approximately 198 players remaining, we counted an assortment of 28 hats. They include mainly baseball caps, but we also spotted a cowboy hat.
Friday, July 1, 2011 11:05 PM Local Time
Vanessa Hellebuyck, our defending champion of last year's Ladies Event, has been eliminated.
We missed the action but are being told that Hellebuyck bet 2,800 on a flop into a lone opponent. Her opponent raised to 7,000, Hellebuyck pushed all in and she was called.
Hellebuyck:
Opponent:
The turn and river failed to improve Hellebuyck and her tournament life was put to an end.

The third-last male competitor in the field has just been cheered off after being crushed at the hands of Ruby Du, who is still piling up a stack worth more than 60,000.
All the money was in the middle on a flop that read (two clubs); the gentleman moved his chips in with for the flush draw, but Du called him down with for top pair.
The turn and river came running , , but with neither one of those cards being a club, the ladies were able to stick it to The Man once again.
To quote tournament supervisor Bob Smith: "Another one bites the dust!"
Friday, July 1, 2011 10:56 PM Local Time
Kirsty Chick has just been sent to the rail at the hands of Dee Strayski, who is now on more than 25,000 in chips.
As Wooka Kim recalled to us, Chick got the last of her money into the middle with , but lost the flip to Strayski's after she caught running kings full of aces. And that, as they say, was that.
Dee Strayski | 25,500 | |
Kirsty Chick | 0 | -4,900 |

Friday, July 1, 2011 10:44 PM Local Time
We caught up with the action on a flop, where Gretchen Brummer and Lily Newhouse apparently got into a small raising war with Brummer being the first to go all-in for her last 11,000. Newhouse fell hard into the tank.
"What did I get myself into?" she said.
Newhouse eventually mucked and Brummer tabled .
Newhouse is down to 9,000 while Brummer has risen to 35,000.
Gretchen Brummer | 35,000 | 14,000 |
Lily Newhouse | 9,000 | -7,000 |

A woman under the gun raised to 1,600 and action folded around to a short-stacked Pam Wilson on the button. She thought for a moment before sliding in her entire stack of 3,175. The blind got out of the way and the UTG player made the call.
UTG:
Wilson:
Wilson had been patient waiting for a hand, but unfortunately the one time she did, she ran into the second-best hand in poker. The flop gave some runner-runner straight options to Wilson, but the turn quickly dashed them. In order to stay alive, Wilson needed one of the red fives on the river. The dealer burned and put out the . It was close, but just one pip shy. Wilson has been eliminated from the tournament.

Frances Anderson has just been eliminated from the 2011 WSOP $1,000 Ladies Championship at the hands of Sandra Suvearingen.
Earlier, Patty Glass did most of the damage to his stack after cracking Anderson's with , pairing an ace on the board. Down to his last chips, Anderson shoved them in from the small blind a short time later with , but Suvearingen woke up with in the big blind.
The board improved neither hand and Anderson was sent packing. Interesting sidenote: when the ladies enquired as to why he was playing in the tournament today, he said that it was "because he sucked".
We can now confirm that there are three male players left in the field.
Patty Glass | 26,000 | |
Sandra Suvearingen | 19,000 | |
