EVENT UPDATES

view updates for day:
Saturday, July 3, 2010 1:54 AM Local Time

In eight short levels we have whittled our field down from 1,941 to less than 600.

The number on the board said 585 as the last three hands of the night were announced, so we will probably have ended up with just a few under that. Impressive stuff, but remember, the plan is to play down to a final table tomorrow, and with only 198 places paying out at all, we are looking at this tournament possibly even going to four days.

Our chip leader heading into Day 2 looks to be Marc Sander, on around 100,000. Plenty of big names are still in the field as well - Victor Ramdin, Dan Heimiller and Matt Hawrilenko are just a few of the folks still in with a shot at this, the last bracelet event before the Main Event. Among the folks who didn't make it were Daniel Negreanu, Roland de Wolfe and Joe Hachem.

We'll be back here at 3pm PT tomorrow when we will be starting out on the long road down to a final table. Join us back here then.

We've got three more hands to go before play is concluded for the evening.

Saturday, July 3, 2010 1:36 AM Local Time

We found Yann Brosolo checking the river of a   board, a good few chips in the middle of the table. His opponent checked behind, and Brosolo flipped  . HIs opponent couldn't beat it and mucked, and Brosolo moved up to 40,000.

Court Harrington just lost a pot with about 30,000 in the middle preflop when he folded to his opponent's 10,000 chip bet on a   flop. Despite the loss, with 72,000 chips, Harrington looks to be the chip leader over in the Amazon Room.

Saturday, July 3, 2010 1:33 AM Local Time

We arrived just in time to see an all-in player turn over   and Jon Turner flip a dominating  . Another plyer at the confessed that he had folded pocket nines.

"You folded two of my nines?" said the all-in player. "Thanks for telling me that, man."

Not too long ago Dan Heimiller was down to about 12,000 chips. On a recent trip to his table we saw him with 37,100. Of course, we didn't catch the hands in which he accumulated them, but we are certain it happened.

Saturday, July 3, 2010 1:10 AM Local Time

Matt Hawrilenko is looking to finish the day on a high note. We walked over to his table just in time to see him arranging a new stack of chips after his   bested an all-in opponent's  . He's now up to about 37,000 chips.

Saturday, July 3, 2010 1:03 AM Local Time

We're not sure whether the chips went in on the flop or before it, but either way come the river Kevin O'Connell was up to 30,000 and his opponent was storming off in disgust.

Joe Cada found himself needing some help, all in for 6,525 with    against an opponent's   .

The     flop was decent for Cada, but he was still behind. The turn was the  , giving Cada the lead. He faded the necessary outs as the river brought the  .

Cada is up to about 14,000 after the hand.

As we strolled by Captain Tom Franklin's table, Franklin was all in on the button with  , up against the cutoff's  . He was already getting ready to leave.

Board:   ...

Franklin sat back down, looking rather cheerful about his new 14,000 stack. "Yeah, write that on PokerNews," sighed his unfortunate opponent, who was left with mere shrapnel.

Two Main Event Champions still remain in the field today. Joe Cada is on the low end, hovering around 6,500, while Jamie Gold is having a very nice day, up to about 52,000.

Saturday, July 3, 2010 12:30 AM Local Time

We arrived at the table and saw about 12,000 in the pot. There was a player all in, Men Nguyen had called, and Matt Marafioti had raised an additional 5,000. Ngyuyen tanked for about two minutes, even getting distracted when a player at another table (after receiving his order from a male cocktail server) said, "Thanks Man."

After the brief distraction, Nguyen gave it up. Marafioti showed   , the all-in player showed   , and Nguyen looked sick. The board ran out       as Marafioti scored the knockout to chip up to roughly 17,000.

Nguyen has about 15,000.

Saturday, July 3, 2010 12:26 AM Local Time

Simon Trumper is up to 26,000. He tols us how it happened.

There had been a raise, which Trumper called holding  . Another gent called, and they saw an   flop with two clubs on it. The original raiser bet out, Trumper went all in, the third player folded, and they were on their backs. Trumper's opponent tabled  , but a third club came in to make Trumper a flush and double him up.

Saturday, July 3, 2010 12:21 AM Local Time

We got to Court Harrington's table to see a board reading   with a little over 2,000 chips in the middle. Harrington was in middle position and was involved with a player in the small blind.

The small blind bet 2,425 into the pot and Harrington slowly made the call. When the river came  , the small blind bet again, this time for 4,500. Harrington made a final call and showed   with the small blind folding.

With the chips he won in the hand, Harrington is now up to just over 52,000

By the by, at some point the tables seem to have switched from 10-handed to nine-handed. The tournament is still occupying a whole section in both the Amazon Room and the Pavilion Room, and they seem to be breaking tables from both rooms, making it particularly hard to track players. One of the players who seems to have quietly disappeared in the midst of all this is the king of the ninja-like silent exit, Phil Ivey.

838 players remain as we head into the last two levels of the day. We've lost more than half the field, but we've got a long, long way to go if we want to get to a final by the end of tomorrow.

Friday, July 2, 2010 11:31 PM Local Time

20 more minutes of hanging around outside.

Back shortly.

Friday, July 2, 2010 11:27 PM Local Time

We arrived on the scene of this hand to see a board reading  . The hand was being played heads up between Scott Montgomery and a player in late position. The late-position player had bet 1,700 into the pot and Montgomery raised it to 5,000. The late-position player then four-bet all in for 6,300 total and Montgomery made the call.

Montgomery:

Opponent:

Montgomery couldn't make his straight and doubled up his opponent.

Friday, July 2, 2010 11:17 PM Local Time

It's just come to our collective attention that the information we received earlier from Harrahs was wrong. Something got miscalculated somewhere along the line and the total number of runners for this tournament was in fact 1,941, not 1,942 as reported. It's a very small difference, but enough to throw out the payouts a little. We'll have the new payouts for your perusal shortly.

Friday, July 2, 2010 11:13 PM Local Time

Matthew Hawrilenko opened the button to 725 and Donnie Peters moved all in from the big blind for 3,100. Hawrilenko made the call to put PokerNews' own Peters at risk.

Peters:

Hawrilenko:

The board ran out       to see Hawrilenko's queen-kicker play as Peters made his way to the rail.
