Agony of Defeat: Poker Player Runs Kings into Aces Twice Vs. Same Opponent, Busts Main Event Day 1

Idan The One

There always seems to be that one player on Day 1 of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event who runs into a brutal cooler or bad beat to bust early. On Monday, Idan The One, who hails from Israel, was that player.

The 2023 WSOP Main Event kicked off at noon PT from inside Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. At the time this article was published, more than 800 players already registered for the first of four Day 1 starting flights.

William Ackerman was under the gun and opted to go all in for 8,000,000. The next player to act was Darrick Arreola who raised to 18,000,000. The rest of the players folded and the cards hit their backs with Ackerman at risk.

On the latest The Chad & Jesse Poker Show[/I][/B] straight from the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP), Chad Holloway & Jesse Fullen are joined by none other than Daniel Negreanu, who took a break from his busy summer schedule to talk about a plethora of topics including what it's been like running deep in the lower buy-in, big field events, interacting with fans, and how he feels about his performance thus far.

The GGPoker Ambassador also offers his thoughts on the Poker Hall of Fame, including who he thinks will get in and the changes he'd like to see moving forward. Finally, "Kid Poker" offers his prediction for the 2023 WSOP Main Event, which is also the first big topic discussed by the hosts.

Colin Robinson opened under the gun to 15,000,000 with just 500,000 behind. It then folded to Moshe Refaelowitz in middle position who called. The remaining players folded and the the two were off to a flop.

The flop came     and the rest of the chips went in.

The turn brought a   giving Refaelowitz a straight and the   river did not improve Robinson. He would hit the rail in 9th place.

Max Kingstone Eliminated in 10th Place ($37,020)

Max Kingstone

Darrick Arreola went all in from the small blind against Max Kingstone in the big blind. Kingstone was down to just a few big blinds and had about half his stack in with the big blind and ante. Both players said they hadn't bothered looking at their cards, as Kingstone was too short to fold and Arreola was after another scalp.

Both players happened to wake up with suited connectors but when the board ran out       Arreola was ecstatic to tell his rail that he had won with eight high, a rather unlikely feat.

Kingstone played with a tremendous amount of patience and precision but won't be taking home the gold today.

Robinson Makes Quads

Colin Robinson and Darrick Arreola decided to run five cards as they waged a raising war preflop. It turned out to be a pair versus pair confrontation.

Arreola was far behind but came into the final table with quite the chip lead, so this pot would be far more crucial to Robinson.

The flop rolled,     and Robinson remained in the lead. Robinson locked up the hand on the turn when the   peeled he made a set followed by a bit of overkill with the   as Robinson made quads the table released a collective, "Ohhhh!"

Mitchell Smith went all in and Darrick Arreola went all in for much more directly to his left. The rest of the table folded and it proved to be a flip.

Arreola's rail was shouting for a king in the window but the dealer did them one better when the     rolled off consecutively, giving him Broadway. Smith was a far way from catching up, as he'd need to somehow end up with a boat to win.

When the   rolled off, Arreola couldn't help himself and he burst into celebration and rushed to his rail. Smith was led on a long walk to payout after he put on a tremendous performance.

Dae Woong Song was under the gun and open jammed all in. It folded all the way to Ian Steinman in the small blind who also announced all in. The big blind folded and immediately Steinmann said that he didn't know that the player under the gun had went all in. None the less the action stayed and the cards hit their backs with Steinmann all-in and at risk.

Ghadi Akari Eliminated in 17th Place ($23,600)

Ghadi Akari

The pay jump between between 17th and 18th place was a close one and a very short-stacked Ghadi Akari caused a bit of controversy as a player at one of the other tables yelled to him that they wouldn't be acting until he did, as it was supposedly obvious he was just tanking for the ladder.

The floor stepped in and counted down both players' hands after a minute, but Akari did the pseudo all-in trick, leaving himself one chip behind and another opportunity to consider his options when Max Kingstone went all in over the top, after an all-in had been declared at the opposing table. Akari made the call.

The flop made Kingstone a pair of sevens as the     rolled off, the board paired with a   on the turn and the river peeled the  , eliminating Akari in 17th place just moments after a player at the other table got 18th.
