Joao Vieira Leads the Final Six in Event #70: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed

Joao Vieira

The final table of Event #70: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed has been set after seven and a half hours of action at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

Portugal's Joao Vieira (7,635,000) will return as the chip leader for the second day in a row after he continued his momentum, with the UK's Jamie O'Connor (5,190,000), and USA's Olivier Busquet (4,050,000), completing the top three counts.

2009 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Cada (3,105,000) will look to claim his fifth WSOP bracelet and once again put his name among a very select few, while Day 1 chip leader Barry Hutter (1,265,000) has the chance to win his second bracelet four years after his first.

The line-up is completed by Frenchman Pierre Calamusa (2,700,000) who will be making his first WSOP final table appearance when the action resumes on Thursday, July 4 at Noon with a first-place prize worth $758,011 up for grabs.

Action of the Day

When the returning 28 players took their seats in the Miranda room, the action got off to a super fast start with eight players departing in the opening 60-minutes.

Gustavo Mastelotto, Turbo Phong Nguyen, Dong Chen, Fernando Vianadacosta, David Cabrera, Richard Lowe, Marton Czuczor and WSOP bracelet winner Joey Couden all saw their day in Event #70 come to an early finish.

2017 Event #45 $5,000 No Limit Hold'em champion Christopher Brammer was next to depart after running pocket deuces into pocket sevens, with Jake Daniels following the Brit to the rail soon after.

Alexandros Theologis (18th - $34,422), Ryan Jones (17th - $34,422), Richard Sheils (16th - $34,422), Steven Sarmiento (15th - $34,422), Ivan Galinec (14th - $34,422), and Bartlomiej Machon (13th - $34,422) hit to the rail to pave the way for the final two tables.

Galinec's departure was cruel with the Croatian losing a three million chip pot with pocket aces after Barry Hutter hit a set on the river with pocket tens, and Galinec was unable to spin up his short stack from there.

Ivan Galinec

Chris Hunichen (12th - $44,771) lost a classic coin flip with ace-king against pocket queens to exit before Shahar Levi
(11th - $44,771) amazingly saw his pocket kings cracked by Olivier Buquet's quad jacks.

Fabiano Kovalski (10th - $59,338) and Patrick Tardif (9th - $59,338) was next to go, with the popular Canadian Twitch streamer Tardif losing a four-bet shove with pocket fives against pocket queens.

The action then slowed down entirely, and the next levels saw chips move back and forth between the final eight with no eliminations.

When the action resumed after the dinner break Ankush Mandavia (8th-$80,109) was at the forefront of the action. The WSOP bracelet winner hit a runner-runner flush to survive when at risk, before losing a massive pot against Joao Vieira who was in the tank for over seven minutes but ultimately made the correct call holding pocket kings on an ace-high board.

The players then joined together on a single table for the first time, and it was Jamie O'Connor's time for the limelight. The Brit cracked kings with pocket sixes after hitting a set on the flop to survive and then sealed a place in the final six when Timothy Cramer (7th - $80,109) ran his ace-king into O'Connor's pocket kings and found no help from the board.

Join us back here on PokerNews at noon on Thursday, July 4 for continued coverage as the final six take center stage to battle for the WSOP gold bracelet under the lights of the CBS Live Stream.

Joao Vieira raised to 225,000 from under the gun and when the action folded to Jamie O'Connor on the button he three-bet to 725,000. The decision moved back around to Vieira, and he sat silently for close to a minute before he moved all in.

O'Connor immediately gave up, and Vieira moved up to 6,900,000.

O'Connor Triples Through Vieira

Jamie O'Connor

Jamie O'Connor put his last 1,265,000 in the middle from the hijack and he was called by Pierre Calamusa in the cutoff. Timothy Cramer folded on the button and Joao Vieira took his time in the small blind. He eventually pushed all in, covering everyone at the table and it was back to Calamusa when Joe Cada folded the big blind. Calamusa quickly folded and they opened up.

Jamie O'Connor:

O'Connor was in bad shape but he could triple up if he was able to get there. The     flop immediately gave the Brit the lead and the   turn and   river didn't change that.

O'Connor's rail went completely nuts and he managed to triple up through Vieira by hitting a miracle six on the flop.

Ankush Mandavia Eliminated in 8th Place ($80,109)

Ankush Mandavia

Joao Vieira raised to 160,000 from the cutoff and saw Olivier Busquet call from the button before Ankush Mandavia put his final 180,000 into the middle. Both Vieira and Busquet put the extra in the middle and decided to check through all three streets as the board fell      .

Mandavia tabled    but was behind to Vieira's   , to hit the rail in 8th place for $80,109.

Joao Vieira Makes Hero Call in Biggest Pot of the Day

Joao Vieira

It all started with a raise from Ankush Mandavia from the button to 180,000 and a three-bet followed by Joao Vieira from the small blind. Big blind Olivier Busquet folded and Mandavia called.

Vieira continued on the     flop with a bet of 430,000. Mandavia stuck around to see the   on the turn and it checked to him this time. He took matters into his own hands when he bet 425,000 on the turn. Vieira check-called on the turn and the   completed the board.

Vieira checked again on the river and Mandavia fired a big bet of 1,200,000 with only 275,000 behind. Vieira only had 1,700,000 and this was a big hand for him. He went into the tank for multiple minutes and Barry Hutter, who was seated on another table and who was playing a short stack for a while, went into the tank as well.

Hutter made it clear that it was unfair for him that Vieira went into another long tank while the blinds kept passing him. The clock was called on Hutter and an entire protest started. The clock was eventually called on Vieira as well after he had seven minutes to think about his decision.

Vieira ended up calling and Mandavia showed    for just ten high. Vieira showed    for a pair of kings and the best hand.

Hutter Wants the Double Up

Barry Hutter has been short for a while and he's been looking to double up. He pushed all in a couple of times and that earned him some chips but the blinds pass quickly on the two four-handed tables. Hutter is now up to 1.5 million chips and that is a little under 20 big blinds.

The two tables will combine to an unofficial final table when there are seven players left and play will stop when the official final table of six is reached.

Vieira Wins a Small One

Timothy Cramer raised to 175,000 from the button and Joao Vieira defended his big blind. The flop was dealt     and Vieira checked to the initial raiser.

Cramer checked behind to see the   on the turn and Vieira chose to lead out on the turn. He put a bet of 280,000 in the middle of the table and that was enough to make Cramer fold his hand.

Calamusa Goes for Value

Pierre Calamusa

The complete       board was already on the table and there was about 700,000 in the middle already. Joe Cada had checked in the small blind and it was up to Pierre Calamusa in the big blind.

He bet 600,000 and that sent Cada in the tank for a little while before he ended up calling. Calamusa tabled    and that was enough to win the pot as Cada mucked his hand.
