Timothy Sheehan Sits Atop the Day 1 Counts
The final starting flight of the 2016 WSOP Main Event just concluded, and over 3,000 players bagged chips at the end of the night. Timothy Sheehan was the runaway chip leader for most of the day, and bagged the biggest stack in Day 1C and the biggest overall stack of the tournament with 394,100. One of the hands that helped him get there occurred when he shoved the turn late in the day. His chip count will put him at the top of the leaderboard across all three flights entering Day 2. Some other big stacks from today's action include Ben Vinson (256,700), Michael Schneider (215,800), Brenden Rubie (211,200), and Doug Kim (208,200). There were lots of former Main Event Champions in the field today. Some of the ones who survived include Joe McKeehen 110,100, Ryan Reiss (82,700), Martin Jacobson (71,000), Chris Moneymaker (61,700), Scotty Nguyen (60,400), Phil Hellmuth (45,200), Greg Merson (24,300), and Joe Hachem (24,900). Not all of the familiar faces in the field were able to move on to Day 2, however. Phil Laak, Randy Lew, John Racener, Brandon Cantu, Chance Kornuth, Jason Mercier, and Ryan D'Angelo were among the notable players who were eliminated before play concluded.
The Amazon Room was filled to capacity today
The final flight of the Main Event ended up attracting a staggering 4,240 players, making it the largest field in a single day in Main Event history. Last year's Day 1C previously held the record, attracting 3,963 players. All three of the Day 1's in the 2016 Main Event combined for a grand total of 6,737 players, making it the largest Main Event field of the past five years. The total prize pool for this year is $63,327,800, with the champion taking home $8,000,000. A record 1,011 players will make the money, with each of them guaranteed at least $15,000. Reigning 2015 WSOP Main Event Champion Joe Mckeehen got the day underway when he delivered the customary "Shuffle Up and Deal!" There were also bracelet ceremonies for Tag Team Champions Doug Polk, and Ryan Fee, Ladies Event Champion Courtney Kennedy, and $25,000 PLO Champion Jens Kylonnen.

With such huge field, there were bound to be lots of dramatic hands. A notable hand that took place early in the day was when Sam Stein lost a pot to a straight-flush. Jamie Kerstetter won a big hand later in the day when she flopped a full house, and sent a player to the rail. Kerstetter bagged 125,100 at the end of the day.
