Flack Flanks Petersen

Layne Flack opened the button to 3,000 and the small blind quickly released. Mickey Petersen in the big blind shoved all in for 40,300 total and Flack made the call after some hefty thinking.

Flack:
Petersen:

While Petersen was the player all in, this hand was crucial for Flack as well with just 11,000 behind if he would lose. The     flop was terrific for Flack, but he wasn't safe just yet. The   on the turn was a good card for Petersen, but the   on the river was a blank and the EPT Copenhagen winner made his exit. Flack in the meantime if up to almost a 100,000.

Clements Busts Torelli

Alec Torelli started out the day as one of the shortest stacks and didn't make a comeback. He had to fold in a pot just minutes ago where his neighbor check-raised him all in on    , leaving himself with just 16,000 behind.

He shoved those 13 big blinds in with    off suit and received a call from Scott Clements who held   , according to Marc-Andre Ladouceur. The best hand pre flop was also the best hand post river, and Torelli made his exit.

With just three players remaining at the table, play stopped for about a minute. With a table quickly broken, Faraz Jaka and Jason Koon joined the table and play commenced again.

Jacobson Sacrifices Lam

Martin Jacobson (Day 1)

Simon Lam was the first player to act, and he moved all in for around 10 big blinds. The action folded to Martin Jacobson in the big, and he eyed the amount of the shove quickly before calling and revealing   .

Lam showed   , and the two were off to the races.

The dealer fanned    , giving Lam a backdoor straight draw, but the   on the turn eliminated those dreams altogether.

The   on the river was a brick as well, and Lam was eliminated. Jacobson chipped up to 131,000.

Trup Queens for West and Waxman

Matt Waxman opened to 2,400 under the gun while discussing the contents of the shake he had in front of him. Tim West seemed interested, but not so much in the contents of the shake anymore. West made it 6,200 from the button, and both blinds folded. Waxman made the call to see a flop.

Both players checked and the   hit the turn. Waxman bet out 7,000 and West made the call. The   fell on the river and Waxman slid three pink 5,000 chips forward. West instantly called the 15,000 bet, but had to muck his    as Waxman tabled   .

"That's what you get for three-betting that crap" Waxman laughed. "That's a calling hand" he continued, "Right George?". George Danzer nodded and the subject changed back to the contents of the shake again.

Klein Gone

Bill Klein

Bill Klein opened the hijack to 3,000 and Sam Greenwood on the button bumped it up to 9,000. Both blinds folded and action was back on Klein. He shoved all in for about 24,000, and Greenwood instantly called.

It was a race situation with Klein tabling    and Greenwood showing   . The flop ([3d3sKh), turn ( ) and river ( ) were of no help to Klein. Klein, who made an appearance on High Stakes Poker in season 7, wished the players good luck, and made his exit.

No Bananas for Kaczka

"All in and a call" the dealer shouted on table 351. No camera's and no interest from railbirds, so it was just us running towards the table where Ashton Griffin was about to bust Harry Kaczka.

With    in front of Griffin, and    displayed in front of Kaczka, things weren't looking to good for the latter. The board already read      and the   completed the disaster for Kaczka. What could have perfectly been a post flop pot where the money had gone in on the turn, it was in fact a pre flop all in, according to David Williams who was the only other player on the table at the time.

By the time Kaczka had exited the tournament area, seat two (Galen Hall) and seat six (Lee Markholt) had been filled as well.

97 Players Will Battle It Out on Day 2

Ashton Griffin starts out 2nd in chips

Never before had the world Series of Poker seen a $10,000 6-max Championship event. Yesterday's event was a first, and 264 players signed up for a shot at the bracelet. A total of 164 players wouldn't complete the first 10 levels on Day 1, and so just 97 players remain. Those players will return at 2 pm local time for some Day 2 action.

30 players will reach the money stage of the tournament, and take home a minimum of $17,793. The champion is to receive $670,041, but that bracelet will be rewarded tomorrow. The schedule for today is to play 10 levels.

As to be expected, a lot of big names are still in contention. Ashton Griffin (162,300), Scott Clements (150,300), Doug Polk (149,300), Joe Cada (138,700) Ryan Fee (134,200) and Philipp Gruissem (130,900) all gathered a lot of chips on the first day multiplying their 30,000 starting stack. Leading the way is Russian player Leonid Markin (206,800), while Simon Lam with just 9,600 in chips will start out as the shortest stacked player.

Play resumes at 2 pm local time (in 75 minutes) with blind level 11 (600/1,200 - 200 ante). Expect a lot of action today, and PokerNews will report from start to finish.

In the meantime, check out an interview Remko Rinkema had with Philipp Gruissem on Day 1:
