WSOP.com Event #18: No Limit Hold'em 8-Handed Turbo DeepStack

On Saturday night, the 2020 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Online Event #18: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em 8-Handed Turbo DeepStack attracted 697 players who rebought 290 times. The 987-entry field resulted in a $937,650 prize pool and after just seven hours of play, it was Canada's Scott "BudLightLime" Hempel coming out on top to win $181,060 and the gold bracelet.

It was a redemption of sorts for Hempel, who the night before finished seventh in Event #17: $777 No-Limit Hold'em for $22,250. Hempel is also a part of the WPT L.A. Poker Classic Main Event final table, which was slated to play out in the HyperX Esports Arena at the Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas back in April. However, it is currently on hiatus during the pandemic. In the meantime, Hempel, who is guaranteed to take home at least $185,330 in that tournament, just went ahead and shipped a WSOP gold bracelet.

After "twheeler68" bubbled the tournament in 144th place, the in-the-money eliminations came at a furious pace. Among those to cash were Roland "prngls12" Israelashvili (133rd - $1,594), Event #1 champ Jonathan "art.vandelay" Dokler (107th - $1,687.77), Phil "Lumestackin" Hellmuth (97th - $1,781.53), Ryan "joeyisamush" Depaulo (84th - $1,969.06), Max "MaxSparrow" Pescatori (52nd - $3,094.24), Erica "huckcheevers" Lindgren (38th - $3,563.07), Ryan "bitc0in" Riess (32nd - $4,219.42), Eric "stackattack5" Salazer (14th - $7,876.26), and final table bubble boy Dave "dunningkrugr" Alfa (9th - $12,845.80), who for the second tournament in a row pulled a "Mark Newhouse" and finished in ninth place.

Barry "puigmyfriend" Hutter began the final table with the chip lead, and right off the bat action heated up. Matthew "EarvinMagic" Parry was the first to go losing with king-five suited against Daniel "IntoTheRiver" Fischer's ace-eight, and not long after Harrison "harrison33" Dobin ran ace-king into the pocket kings of Hempel to exit in seventh place.

With six players remaining, 21-year-old Landon "ActionDealer" Tice failed to get lucky with king-nine suited to overcome Andrew "GoatMaster" Melillo's ace-queen suited, which sent him to the rail with his first-ever WSOP cash good for $29,817.

Hutter, the most accomplished player at the table, was the next to go after his ace-queen failed to hold against Hempel's jack-ten, and then Hempel dispatched Fischer in fourth place using five-six suited to make a flush against the latter's king-queen. In the very next hand, Hempel got the hattrick when he flopped trips with ten-three to bust Melillo, who got their short stack all in preflop with jack-eight suited.

Hempel began heads-up play with 24 million to the 15.5 million of Myles "Shipthemoney" Kotler. While the latter managed to take the chip lead at one point, Hempel soon took it back and opened up a lead. In the final hand, Kotler called off with king-ten only to see Hempel roll over pocket tens, which held for the win.

Melillio got it in good but the     flop was a disaster as Hempel flopped trips. The   turn left Melillo drawing live as a nine would give him a straight, but it didn't come in as the   bricked on the river.

Hutter was ahead but had a sweat as the     flop gave Hempel a gutshot.

The   turn was safe for Hutter but the   river completed Hempel's straight and eliminated Hutter in fifth place.

With blinds at 250,000/500,000/62,500, action on the table folded around to 21-year-old Landon "ActionDealer" Tice who raised all in for 5,066,829 from the small blind and "GoatMaster" called off their 4,493,262 stack from the big blind.

Tice was behind but connected with the     flop.

Unfortunately for Tice, the   appeared on the turn giving "GoatMaster" Broadway and the   river secured their double-up.

Tice was left with 500,000 which was gone the very next hand. Tice exited in sixth place for $29,817.27, his first-ever WSOP cash.

With the blinds at 160,000/320,000/40,000, Harrison "harrisond33" Dobin raised the button to and Scott "BudLightLime" Hempel three-bet to 1,599,999 from the big blind. Dobin then four-bet jammed for 5,534,425 and Hempel called.

With the blinds at 140,000/280,000/35,000, Brian "XcrazylegsX" Frasca raised to 1,642,000 from the cutoff and led himself just 512 behind. Harrison "harrisond33" Dobin called from the small blind and then bet 280,000 on the     flop. Frasca called off and the hands were turned up.

Myles "Shipthemoney" Kotler called from the small blind as did Fischer and the flop came    . Both players checked and Kotler bet Fischer out of the pot after he fired out 420,000 on the   turn.

Salazar was ahead but the     flop made things interesting by giving Dobin a diamond flush draw. The   turn completed it, which left Salazar drawing dead to the river, which was the meaningless  .
