Turning Stone Main Event Day1A Chip Leader Scott Hosbach

The opening flight of the WSOP Circuit $1,700 Main Event saw 199 entries file into the Turning Stone Event Center including plenty of big names, some of whom were among the 21 survivors who advanced to Sunday’s Day 2.

At night’s end, it was Scott Hosbach of Rochester, NY who bagged the chip lead with 743,000 chips. He’s trailed by Ian Gavlick with 585,000 and Cindy Spier with 528,000.

Holbach earned the chip lead late in the day when he flopped quads against Anthony Runza in one of the biggest pots of the day and grew his stack from there.

Just behind the top three is the first big name who will return Sunday to continue their chase for more WSOP Circuit glory, WSOP bracelet and Circuit ring winner Jesse Lonis. He’ll bring 490,000 chips back Sunday.

Also advancing were Circuit ring winner Hayden Glassman with 307,000 chips, Matthew Wantman, who’ll bring 278,000 forward as he looks to add to his $1,100,000+ in WSOP earnings with his 101st cash, defending champion Joseph Rice who bagged 192,000, two-time ring winner Justin Carey with 135,000, and WSOP bracelet winner Greg Ostrander, who will have some work to do to spin up his 58,000 chip stack.

Plenty of other big names were in the field Thursday, but they’ll have to try to advance in one of the two remaining opening flights.

Among them was five-time WSOP bracelet winner Shaun Deeb, who was eliminated just before dinner by Rice. All-time WSOP cashes leader Roland Israelashvili added another payday to his resume, finishing in the top 30 to earn a min-cash, but he couldn’t survive until the end of the night to continue on for more. Circuit ring winner and Western New York product DJ MacKinnon’s day was also short-lived, but he’ll be back to battle again on Friday.

The $301,485 built toward the total prize pool for the Main Event Thursday is just the tip of the iceberg as the turnouts for flights 1B and 1C are expected to far surpass the Day 1A turnout.

Flight 1B goes at 11 a.m. local time Friday and WSOP.com will be on hand again to bring you all the action from Turning Stone Resort Casino, so keep your browsers locked here for all the updates from our live reporting team.
