Chris Lynch, a full-time truck driver and amateur poker player, has won Event #12 at Circuit Horseshoe Tunica, $400 No-Limit Hold'em Double Stack (1 Day). Lynch collects a career-best $14,969 payday in addition to his first Circuit ring.
Lynch plays poker once or twice a week as his driving takes him around the country, though he usually ends up playing cash games. He was in the Memphis suburbs this weekend, however, and noticed the single-day event at Horseshoe Tunica. A late night's effort of cards later, he's the winner.
"I play when I can," he told the WSOP. "My focus is on our trucking business right now, but it gives us a lot of freedom around the country to play different places."
Lynch did it in true underdog style, too, being down to just a few chips against six-time ring winner Maxwell Young, who was looking for his second triumph of the series. Instead, Lynch doubled up several times when all in, including an unlikely two-outer when he had against Young's . The flop was and the turn a brick, leaving Lynch those two outs, and one of them arrived on the river.
Young, from Portland, Oregon, appeared set to close out his seventh career Circuit triumph when he took a dominating lead during four-handed play. Instead, his late run of tough luck ended as a third-place finish for $6,659, while Memphis's Jamie Strickland held on for second and $9,251. Strickland got the last of his chips in good with against Lynch's , but a runout sealed Lynch's come-from-behind win.
As for his winnings, Lynch said, "I'm going to share it with my kids a little bit, to give them a leg up. And pocket some of it and use it for the next tournament."
