Ruth Hagen
Ruth Hagen came into the final table of Event #4: $400 No-Limit Hold’em as the shortest stack in the field, bringing only 57,500 to the final table when the blinds were at 3,000/6,000 with a 1,000 ante. But with a little patience and a run of good cards, Hagen was able to overtake Scott Stewart who had cruised through most of the tournament as the chip leader.
“I just waited,” Hagen said. “And then I caught some lucky flops against Scott. He’s a great player.”
Hagen had nothing but good things to say about her heads up opponent Scott Stewart, who has a streak of second place finishes recently.
“I think he’s wonderful,” Hagen said about Stewart. “He’s hard… Hard to read. He does the same thing he does with aces that he does with twos. He’s got five rings and I can’t say anything better about him.”
It wasn’t until today that Hagen felt like she had a chance to win the tournament, but once David Simon busted, Hagen was able to worry a little bit less about the pay jumps and start focusing on winning.
But for Hagen, she also attributed a lot of her victory to luck. In one hand, she got it all in against Stewart with aces against Stewart’s. There was a king in the window, but an ace rolled off right underneath.
“The first thing I saw was the king so I had an oh shit moment,” Hagen said. “Then you know the ace came. And I had the same thing against him yesterday. I was all in with ace-queen and he had ace-king. The board came ace, king, queen, queen. So that’s the only reason that I’m still here. Lucky flops. You got to get lucky. “
Hagen has played the World Series of Poker Circuit stop at Harvey’s in Lake Tahoe for the last five years and says she loves the stop. This is the first ring for the 59-year-old who works in human resources. For her victory she will also take home $13,398 and 50 points towards the Global Casino Championship.
