California pro ventures East and picks up a career-best live score
Trevor Foley is the newest first-time winner on the WSOP Circuit. Foley outlasted a field of 154 entries in the series’ only $580 event, winning his first gold ring and $20,789 in cash.
Foley is a 34-year-old professional poker player from Southern California. He and his wife have a three-year old daughter, and their family is just about set to grow with the arrival of their first son in a few months’ time.
He’s been playing the game full-time since he graduated from college, but Foley’s face is a relatively new one on the live Circuit. “To be honest, I’m just now starting to get into live events,” he said. “I’ve had some success online, but I want to start traveling more.”
Foley says he prefers live games to those online, and the decision to make the trip to Baltimore turned out to be quite a profitable one.
Foley picked his way through a tough field and a dangerous final table, ending up heads-up against Jason Gooch for the ring. “He was a great player,” Foley said in his postgame interviews. “I noticed yesterday — he had the chip lead a lot of that time, and I did a little bit of research on him last night and saw that he’s really good.
The two finalists started the heads-up duel nearly even in chips, and the match ended in fitting fashion on a big coin flip for almost all the chips in play. Gooch four-bet shoved with ace-king suited preflop, and Foley called with pocket nines to race for the win. The latter flopped a set and turned a full house, locking up the win one card early. The payout is the largest on his live tournament record to date.
