Jacob Phillips survives a tough final table to win his first WSOP gold ring.
Council Bluffs, Iowa (April 6, 2016) -- Six max final tables are never easy to win. That was especially true about the most recent one in Council Bluffs. The final table of the six max event not only had many experienced players, but it also had some of the hottest players at the series. Jacob Phillips maneuvered his way through the daunting final table to win his first career gold ring and the first place prize of $12,853.
The final table had four previous gold ring winners at it. They were Jeff Epstein (2nd), Doug Hutcheson (4th), Mike Reed (5th), and Duane Gerleman (6th). Epstein, Hutcheson, and Reed all have one gold ring and Gerleman has three. Gerleman and Hutcheson both won rings earlier this series and are the top two players in the Casino Championship standings.
To make things tougher, the final table bubble boy was Mark Evans, who was the defending champion in this event. Phillips was not part of the group of gold ring winners coming in, but he did have one of the most extensive WSOP resumes. Coming in Phillips had 25 WSOP cashes, 21 of which were Circuit cashes. He was just missing the gold ring and now he's got it.
"I enjoy it, it's a passion of mine," said Phillips about the game.
Phillips has been a consistent WSOP competitor. He has cashed in at least five events every year since 2012 with his biggest cash coming in the 2014 $10,000 Las Vegas Main Event. He finished 250th for $38,634
"It's definitely a confidence builder moving forward. It's a point, not a peak," said Phillips about his victory.
Expect to see Phillips in Vegas this summer. Today's victory will give him momentum heading into the summer series. He is happy with the gold ring, but is looking for more. He wants a bracelet.
Phillips is from Ozark, Missouri. When he isn't playing poker he helps with his parents business.
