After several minutes in the tank, Hastings folds, and Ameller folds instantly. giving the pot to Gotlieb. He appears dissatisfied by the result, though, dropping his head to the table with a laugh.

"I almost called," Hastings smiles across the table. "I just didn't want to be drawing dead."

"So you didn't have a nine or a ten in your hand, then?" Conniff presumes.

Hastings confirms. "Jack and an open-ender."

"Ha," Conniff figures it out. "I was like, 'I thought he said he didn't have a nine in his hand."

It sounds like jack-five, but it's in the muck whatever it was, and Gotlieb collects the pot to earn a significant increase.
