Day 1a Concludes, Action Resumes Tomorrow at 1 p.m. (GMT+1)
Bag 'em and tag 'em boys, Day 1a is in the books, with approximately 46 of today's 191 starters remaining in the tournament. David La Ronde appears to still be at or near the chip lead with Jason Gray, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Daniel Negreanu and Brandon Cantu not far behind.
Official chip counts will be posted as soon as they become available, which we're told will not be too long from now.
Join us again tomorrow for all the action from the floor of the Empire Casino in London, where a sellout crowd is expected for Day 1b of this Ł1,500 No-Limit Hold'em tournament.
Until then, good night and good luck from London!

Football Match Proves Too Tempting
On the turn of a

board, Brian Johnson check-raised Henrik Gwinner all in. Gwinner, having committed most of his stack, muttered something along the lines of having tickets to see the Chelsea vs. Manchester United match on Sunday, and how he'd rather go to that than try to negotiate the last few minutes of the level with a short stack. He called all in with

against Johnson's

, which tripped up on the

river even though it wasn't needed.

Davood Mehrmand Eliminated
Davood Mehrmand, he of the boisterous personality and lively table talk has been silenced.
Mehrmand had the misfortune of taking his

to war with Daniel Negreanu's

. The money went in on the

flop. The

and the

that followed were no help to Mehrmand and he hit the rail with about seven minutes to play before we wrap for the day.

Double Knockout
The short-stacked Hoa Ngo didn't waste too much time getting his stack in before Arnaud Mattern reraised all in for just over 6,000 from late position. Tony Mackay was sitting in the blinds and decided to give them both value by making the call.
Ngo tabled

, Mattern

, and Mackay

.
The board came

!!!

.
The two-outer came for Mackay on the turn and he eliminated two players, helping his stack up to 21,000.

When an Early Night is not Early Enough
Despite the fact that the length of the day was curtailed by two full levels of play, Rumit Somaiya just decided to call it a night with over 20 minutes remaining in Level 8. With about 40,000 worth of chips in his stack, Somaiya just put on his coat, filled out his end of day card with the tournament staff, and left!
No bad beat, no big fold, no steam to walk off-- it appeared that he'd just had enough and figured he was well-stacked enough to survive being blinded off for a couple of more rounds.
Somaiya did, however, leave a banana behind in his absence to take care of his chips. Thus far, the banana appears to be playing rather tight.

Hoa'd of Thought It
Carl Hostrup made a raise to 2,200 from late position and Hoa Ngo defended his big blind by making the call.
The flop came

and Ngo called Hostrup's 3,500 continuation bet before the turn came

. Ngo checked once more and was to face an all-in bet, this time totaling 13,900.
He sat there and thought for a long while, but it was no Hollywood as he made the call for most of his stack with

. It was a good call too as he had Hostrup's

out-kicked.
The river came

!!! It made two pair for Ngo but made the straight for Hostrup, doubling him up once more, this time to 42,000.

David La Ronde = New Chip Leader
All the money went in on an

flop, David La Ronde holding

for trips and his disappointed opponent with

. The

on the turn made La Ronde a full house and the

on the river sealed up his victory. His opponent hit the rail and La Ronde stacked up his 71,000 chips, good enough for the current lead.

Jason Not Feeling Gray
Jason Gray has added to his chip stack after knocking out Guillaume de la Gorce. The board read

and the Frenchman called all in on the river, but mucked when he saw his opponent's

and thus exited the stage.

Kabbaj Gets the Bacon
John Kabbaj has managed to double his stack up to 30,000. He managed to get it all in preflop holding

versus an opponent's

. The board blanked out and now suddenly Kabbaj has 50 percent more than the average stack.

He Sees Inside Souls
John Juanda raised to 2,400 from the cutoff and only found a call from the big blind player, before the flop came

.
The big blind led out for a 3,600 bet that Juanda called, before the turn brought us the

. Once again the big blind led out for 5,000, which Juanda thought through and made the call.
The river

saw both players check it through. Juanda waited for his opponent to show his missed gutshot draw with

. Juanda showed the not-very-strong but winning

.
Juanda is up to 36,000 now.

Untz...Untz...Untz...
Ah yes. The throb of dance club electronica has returned to the Empire Casino, spilling over from what appears to be one of the property's discos. There hasn't been nearly the uprising we saw when the cabaret act went on an hour ago though a number of players have thrown their headphones back on in an attempt to drown it out.
I say bring back the cabaret. Next time I'm requesting "Luck be a Lady."

And Away We Go...
Action has resumed for what will be the last level of the evening.
The last level? What's that you say? Weren't they supposed to play ten levels, not eight?
The rate of bust-outs has been so rapid today that the tournament directors made the decision to conclude play at the end of Level 8 instead of the end of Level 10, excellent news for the players who will be able to catch some extra sleep (or hit the bar for a drink) tonight.
Fri, 19 Sep 2008 22:58:45
Color-Up
The action has been paused between levels while the green 25-denomination chips are colored up and raced off the tables.

Brian Johnson on the Upswing
The player in the hijack seat opened for 1,800, Brian Johnson raised to 3,400 from the button, the small blind flat-called and the hijack called as well. The flop came down

. The small blind checked to the hijack, who bet 5,000, prompting an all-in shove from Johnson for 10,250. The small blind insta-mucked, but the hijack tanked a while, disgustedly mucking his cards in the end.
Coming back from the dinner break with 25,000 and dipping as low as 12,000 at one point, Johnson is now up to a healthy 30,000.

No Blank for Blanco
Cristiano Blanco raises from UTG to 1,800 and is called by the big blind, a young, Scandinavian-looking kid. They see a flop of

and the big blind checks, Blanco then bets 3,700 into the pot, only to see his opponent quickly reraise all in for an additional 10,225.
Blanco counts out the extra chips, which represents the majority of his stack, and then decides to make the call with his

. It's ahead, but vulnerable to the drawtastic

that the big blind shows. The turn is the

but the river is not the two pair the Italian wants to see, as it's the

, leaving him crippled and propelling his opponent up to almost 30,000.

Channing Not Feeling It
Neil Channing was one of those slightly bemused by the music and singing going on behind him, though he admitted that today he wasn't really "feeling it." For the tournament that is, not the music.
"I've misplayed two hands today. And this really is an all-in or pass tournament, so you can't afford to misplay hands."
He's currently under pressure with around 9,000.
