Jason Somerville

Jason Somerville's summer in Las Vegas has come to an end as the second break of the day approaches.

As it was recalled to us, the money was all in on the turn on a board that read     ; Somerville had turned a set with his   , but his opponent had already flopped a higher set with   ! The river   was of no help to anyone and with that, it's sayonara Somerville.

Pablo Santos Cobo got off to a quick start today, pushing his stack up over 50,000 by the end of the first level. He has fallen a bit, however, during Level 2, and had seen his stack dip below the starting 30,000 when the following hand took place.

Three players -- the big blind, a middle position player, and Cobo in the cutoff -- had built a small pot prior to the arrival of a     flop. It checked to Cobo who bet 1,200, and both opponents called.

The turn was the  . It checked to Cobo again who fired 4,000, and this time only the middle position player called.

The river was the  . Cobo's opponent checked, and he bet once again, this time 6,000. His opponent tanked for two full minutes before calling, in response to which Cobo slid his cards forward face down. His opponent started to do the same, but was made to turn over his cards --    for a failed flush turned eights and treys. Cobo's hand was turned over as well --    -- reveavling that he'd fired three barrels but from one opponent couldn't force the fold.

With about 10 minutes to go in Level 2, Cobo slips to 17,000.

We've been watching Brad Garrett work his way toward the top of the counts for the last four hours now, and we just caught the tail end of another pot he dragged.

The action we saw happend on the river of a          . There was about 10,000 already in the pot when Garrett bet 2,000 there, and his lone opponent check-called that final bet. Garrett turned up     for the flopped flush, and it was good enough to drag the pot, pushing his stack all the way up to 66,000.

Garrett was the class clown early in the day, but he's settled down into his seat now, and it looks like he's ready to grind for a while.

On a flop of    , the player in the big blind bet 800 and received a call from Victoria Coren on the button. When the   appeared on the turn, Coren called another bet of 800 and watched the   peel off on the river.

This time the big blind checked, and Coren bet 2,600, but not before saying, "26, my age." The big blind made the call, only to muck when Coren showed    for a full house.

It's been a nightmare second stanza for Karina Jett, who's down to just 4,000 in chips as the action continues here in Day 1c of the 2011 WSOP Main Event.

The action folded around to the player in the cutoff who raised to 525 before the flop; the button folded and Jett called from the small blind, as did the big blind, to go three ways into a flop that read    . Jett opened for 1,125 and the big blind folded, but the cutoff called before the dealer produced the turn of the  .

Jett check-called the cutoff's bet of 1,500, then both players checked down the river of the  . Jett tabled   , but the cutoff had made top two pair with his    to take the pot down.

We'd like to think he hasn't been sitting there all day without us noticing, so we'll assume that Daniel "Jungleman" Cates has just been broken into the Purple section, sitting four seats to the right of Yevgeniy "JovialGent" Timoshenko.

The action folded to Padraig Parkinson who raised to 525 from middle position before the button and the blinds called to make it four-handed to a flop of    . The blinds checked to Parkinson who bet 1,000 and only the button was interested in seeing the turn with Parkinson, which was the  .

Parkinson led out for 1,025 and the button called, then the action repeated on the river   before Parkinson showed down    for two pair. The button player didn't look all that happy as he mucked.

Parkinson is now up to more than 34,000.

With 10,000 in the pot and a board reading      , the small blind bet 6,500 and Gavin Smith called behind.

The small blind showed    for jacks and fours, but it was no good against the    of Smith.

Dario Alioto was just seen losing some more chips after a     flop. The player first to act checked and ALioto bet 600 which received one call from the player bed him. The player next to act call-raised a 1,300 bet from Alioto to 3,300. Alioto never saw a river as he and his opponent mucked their hand and he now has 15.000.

On a board reading     , an unknown player bet 2,800 only to have Matthias de Meulder make it 6,950. A call was made, followed by the   on the river. The unknown player then check-called a bet of 12,425 from the Belgian pro, only to muck when de Meulder show    for top set.

De Meulder is up to 59,000.

Paul Pierce at the table.

Paul Pierce and another player went to a flop of       and already had 4,000 in the pot. The other player checked and Pierce bet 5,000.

The other player mumbled something about taking Pierce's money somewhere else and Pierce said, "My money's right here if you can take it."

His opponent folded and Pierce flashed    .

A player raised to 575 from early position and got two callers, including Chris Moneymaker sitting a couple of seats to his left. The flop came    . The preflop raiser bet 1,450, and both Moneymaker and the third player sitting in the cutoff called. The turn was the  , and this time the EP player bet 3,550. Moneymaker again called -- leaving himself only 5,000 or so behind -- while the third player skedaddled.

The river was the  . Moneymaker's opponent fired again, enough to put Moneymaker all in, and the 2003 ME champ quickly called. The aggressor throughout the hand showed    for a turned set of jacks, but Moneymaker had    for a jack-high straight.

"Nice hand, Moneymaker," said his opponent. "Thank you, sir," he replied. "A really, really sick turn."

After his difficult first hour-and-a-half of play today, that one puts Moneymaker back up around 19,000.

Cody Slaubaugh raised to 450 preflop and the big blind decided to defend. The big blind then check-called a bet of 600 on the     flop, leading to the   turn. Again the big blind check-called a bet, this time 1,075, and the   rolled off on the river.

Both players checked and Slaubaugh revealed   , which was good enough to win the hand.

Massimiliano Martinez raised to 700 from middle position before Liz Lieu made it 1,700 from the button, Martinez then made it 4,775 to go and Lieu flat-called to see a     flop.

Martinez fired out 6,250 and Lieu raised it up to 17,250 only for her opponent to reraise all in for 46,950. Lieu tanked for several minutes thinking through the hand a second time out loud, before eventually calling all in for 32,500 with    but finding herself behind to    which held on the   turn and   river.

Lieu is out and Martinez looks to be our early chip leader with about 98,000

David Steicke in an earlier event

We didn't see the hand that did him in, but we did see David Steicke step off the featured table stage in the Purple section and lope out the door. A quick check finds his old seat empty of chips, and it's safe to say the shark from down under has gone under here on Day 1c.

Eric Cloutier - busto

We were unable to retrieve the details of the hand, but having nursed a short stack for most of his level, Eric Cloutier and his wig have been confirmed as the latest to have made the 2011 WSOP Main Event Day 1c obituaries.

Players are always instructed to protect their hand by some means and many choose to use a simply tournament chip or coin. Others tend to go a more creative route. Ever since Greg "Fossilman" Raymer used fossils to protect his cards during the Main Event in 2004 it seems that many players want to have something cool and unique to help protect their hand. We did a quick scan of the black section here in the Pavilion room and found players using all of the following items as card protectors:

Polished Rock
Tic Tac Box
Miniature Sumo Wrestler
Wooden Cross
Figurine of "Donkey" from the Shrek movies
Clear Crystal
Dog Figurine
Jade Chipmunk
Miniature New England Patriots Football Helmet
Yoda Figurine

Whether using these items will bring their owners luck or not is yet to be seen, but we admit it might be fun if the guy holding the tiny yoda wins the whole thing and we end up seeing a slew of Star Wars figurines at the tables next year.

Christina Lindley raised to 400 from the button, getting called by both the blinds to see an     flop which was checked around. On the   turn, the big blind fired out 750 and Lindley was the only caller to the   river where her opponent now bet 1,900. Lindley called again and tabled   , the big blind couldn't beat this and Lindley moved up to 35,000.

Just as we stepped away from the main feature table, a big hand arose for Jonathan Duhamel in which the defending champ found himself all in by the river. At showdown, Duhamel produced the better hand with eights full of kings versus an opponent holding sixes full of kings, thereby scoring a welcome double-up.
