South Carolina's Russell Sullivan has taken down Event #7 at Circuit IP Biloxi after a lengthy heads-up duel against Joseph Hebert. Sullivan has earned $13,539 in addition to his second career Circuit ring.
Sullivan brought the chip lead to the final table, but he dodged elimination on several occasions on his way to the win. The middle stages of the final table were marked by Hebert's surge to a dominant stack, but during three-handed play, Sullivan rivered a four to fill and inside straight to double up and stay alive.
Sullivan then eliminated Benjamin Thomas in third, but needed good fortune a second time against Hebert: This time, he got all in with against Hebert's , and an flop gave him two pair, and soon enough the lead. From there Sullivan closed out the win, though it wasn't an easy task, before or after, as the two dueled heads-up for roughly two hours before Sullivan took down the win.
Hebert collected $8,370 for his tough-luck-late runner-up showing, while Thomas, the Event #5 winner, earned $6,025 for third.
A thrilled but fatigued Sullivan spoke with the WSOP following his win. "It's amazing to finally final-table something again and win," he noted, having experienced a dry spell since his first Circuit victory in early 2017. "It was just my night."
Sullivan had to endure a long dry spell after reaching the final table with a big stack. "I wasn't catching any hands. I only played like three hands until we got four-handed -- I played aces, kings, and ace-king.
Sullivan noted the lengthy duel would keep him from calling his wife with the great news until morning, and no partying after the win was scheduled. With a chuckle he added, "It was a battle. I'm tired, and just ready to go to sleep."
