Hillsborough, NC's,John Stephenson has captured the title in Event #12: $365 Double Stack No-Limit Hold'em at Circuit Harrah's Cherokee. Stephenson, 41, earned the winner's ring and $26,135 in his first-ever WSOP cash.

Stephenson faced a difficult task when action in Event #12 moved to heads-up play, as he was outchipped by more than 2:1 to his remaining opponent, two-time Circuit ring winner Ryan Jones of Burlington, KY. Stephenson doubled through to take the lead. Then, just moments later, Jones moved the last of his chips in with   , and Stephenson called with   . The board blanked, bringing nothing over a six, and Stephenson had the win.

Jones, who was the Main Event winner here at Harrah's Cherokee in April of 2015, earned $16,151 for the runner-up effort. Third place went to Las Vegas, NV's Jonathan Gerrick, who earned $11,802.

"It's wonderful. Wonderful. I love it; that's what we're here for," Stephenson said, as he indicated his wife Tabatha, who railed the entire final table. And as for having to duel against the accomplished Jones, he said, "We're from the same area; I've never met him before. He played a great game, but I got a couple of good hands. It worked out."

As for the winnings, in Stephenson's words, "It's going into the motorcycle. I got a new bike, and there's a lot of stuff I want to do to it. Make my Harley look a little better." Stephenson also promised he'd be back in Cherokee the next time the Circuit series rolls into town.
