Irene Carey could lock up the lead in the Casino Championship race by making the final table today
It's the first World Series of Poker Circuit stop of the season and that means that the first Global Casino Championship seat will also be awarded today to the winner of the Main Event. Among the 21 players in contention, five of them earned a seat in this year's GCC; Dan Lowery, Ryan Phan, Charles Johnson, Todd Mercer and Eyal Bensimhon.
Leading the way from at the start of play in Day 3 will be Matthew Ernst who bagged up 3,565,000. Ernst is looking to add to his nine World Series of Poker cashes with a victory here today. He would lock up his biggest WSOP score ever with a finish of 12th or better. Also still in the running is Charles Johnson, who won this event in December of 2017. Johnson topped a field of 957 players to take down a first place prize of $272,744 and he's made it back to the final 21 of this slightly larger field. Another victory would cement Johnson's place in the Global Casino Championship once again.
Irene Carey is also looking to improve on her already impressive series. Thus far she has four cashes for over $32,000 along with one runner-up finish in Event #1, and she sits fifth on the venue leaderboard. Making the final table would tie her for the lead in the series, and anything above that would put her in the pole position. Of course a win would lock up a seat as well, but Carey has many paths to the GCC, and she'll be looking for more than just that.
Todd Mercer currently sits second in the chip counts, and funnily enough, Mercer was the first player to qualify for last year's Global Casino Championship by winning Casino Champion here at Harrah's Cherokee. He could once again be the first player to qualify with a win today in the Main Event. Last year, Mercer's five cashes at this stop, one being a victory, was enough to give him 90 points and lock him up a seat in a highly contest race, and while he didn't log a cash in the Main Event that series, his performance in this one is certainly making up for that. He'll be looking to add a second ring to his collection today.
Action for this highly stacked field is set to begin at 12 p.m. on Monday, August 13. Play will begin in level 26 with blinds of 20,000/40,000 and an ante of 5,000. The plan is to play down to a winner on Monday and with such a stacked field, it's likely to be a good one. WSOP.com will provide updates from throughout the day, so be sure to stay tuned in for all the action.
