EVENT UPDATES

view updates for day:
Monday, April 16, 2018 2:34 AM Local Time

The third time is the proverbial charm, at least for Rossville, Georgia's Matthew Higgins. Higgins closed out a near wire-to-wire victory to win $101,326 and his first Circuit gold ring in Event #2, No-Limit Hold'em $500K Guarantee, after entering the day with a commanding lead and continuing to gain ground through most of Day 2 before closing out a fast-paced final table.

Higgins' early dominance of this event brought back thoughts of two similar Circuit main events here at Harrah's Cherokee, where he surged to an opening-day lead but faltered short of a Circuit win. That wasn't the case this time out, though he did have a momentary setback, dropping four million in chips just before the dinner break, dropping briefly into third. Once the players returned, though, Higgins regained those chips and more, never relinquishing the lead again.

Higgins closed out his final opponent, Narimaan "Nick" Ahmadi, to a loud eruption from his considerable rail, earning his largest-ever WSOP cash. All six of Higgins' career WSOP cshes have come in Circuit events in Cherokee.

Ahmadi's solid second-place showing, worth, $63,530, was likewise his best WSOP cash. The same was true for third-place finisher Raveesh Asnani, who collected $48,923 this night.

"It feels amazing," said Higgins. "I've been close a bunch of times." He noted his breakthrough win here reversed his bad luck at his last Cherokee final table, when he crashed out after getting his chips in with ace-king against ace-queen pre-flop. This time around, though, the luck found Higgins right through to the winner's celebration.

Event #2 $365 No-Limit Hold'em $500K Guaranteed has reached an unofficial 10-player final table. Day 1 leader Matthew Higgins has accumulated more chips throughout the day, and he's arrived at the final table with about 8.7 million in chips. That's almost double the 4.7 million of his closest competitor, Matt Silva, with Fred Battle third at about 3.3 million.

Matthew Higgins leads a field of 130 survivors into Day 2 of Event #2, $365 No-Limit Hold'em $500K Guaranteed. Higgins bagged his 870,000 chips late on Saturday, and takes a healthy lead into Sunday's noon restart in this event.
Sunday, April 15, 2018 1:18 AM Local Time

Play has ended for the night in starting flight 2D, as the field was winnowed to its hard cutoff point of 66 players, or five percent of the field. Leading the way in this flight is Matthew Higgins, who bagged a massive 870,000 in chips, nearly twice as many as his nearest competitor in 2D play.

Higgins and the 65 other survivors from this flight will join an additional 64 survivors from flights 2A, 2B, and 2C. All 130 players will return at noon on Sunday, when the field will play down to a winner.

Complete reports by chip count, last-name alpha, and by Sunday's seat assignment are available under the "Reports" tab. Posts detailing both the 2D survivors and those who cashed but were eliminated before the chips were bagged will follow here shortly.

A short while ago, starting flight 2D narrowed to 135 survivors and reached the payout spots. The min-cash number here is $589, and the field may be trimmed to as few as 66 players when action concludes later this evening.
Saturday, April 14, 2018 4:56 PM Local Time
Today's massive tournament for starting flight 2D will more than double the size of the field. With the late-registration period closed and the numbers just calculated, there are 1,317 more entrants today into Event #2. That brings the overall field size to 2,608 paid entries.

135 of today's 1,317 entrants will make the money this evening, with a min-cash in this flight worth $589. Roughly half of the 135 players who make the money will survive today's action and return for tomorrow's Day 2, joining the survivors from the other three starting flights.
