Goldman on Upswing

Lee Goldman has been grabbing chips during the first level, pushing up over the half-million mark. He took a few more off of Viacheslav Zhukov just a moment ago when the pair reached the river with the board showing      , and Goldman got Zhukov to call his 29,000-chip bet.

Zhokov showed      for a straight, but Goldman had a full house with      to scoop the pot.

Pfutzenreuter Climbing, Gross Falls Back to Pack

Steve Gross has lost some chips here during the first level, while Timo Pfutzenreuter has made some gains at his table.

Just now those two played a smallish hand with Gary Bolden that began with a Bolden open to 25,000 from the cutoff and Gross (SB) and Pfutzenreuter (BB) calling. All checked the     flop, then it was Pfutzenreuter betting 38,000 on the   turn and getting callers from both opponents.

The trio checked around after the   fell on fifth street. Gross showed     , but Pfutzenreuter had      for a straight and Bolden mucked.

Mallor, Israelashvili, Poche Out

Roland Israelashvili

We just had three players bust almost simultaneously on separate tables, all short-stacked players who failed in their attempts to better their status during the early going.

First it was Ross Mallor being eliminated in 22nd. In his final hand, Tony Gargano raised to 16,000 from the button, Mallor reraised all in for 81,000 from the small blind, then Salman Behbehani four-bet shoved from the big blind and Gargano stepped aside.

Mallor had      and Behbehani     , and when the board came      , Behbehani's spade flush meant the end of Mallor's Event #41 run.

Meanwhile, Roland Israelashvili entered today last in chips of the remaining players, and he soon got his stack all in against Alex Manzano only to be felted in 21st place.

Then it was Jonathan Poche losing his stack to Lee Goldman over on Table 447 to earn a 20th-place cash.

Gross Adds a Few

Start-of-day chip leader Steve Gross has added a few more to his leading stack in the early going on Day 3.

Just now Gross opened with a bet from middle position and Alex Manzano called out of the big blind, and the pair saw the flop come    . Manzano checked, Gross bet 22,000, and Manzano called. Both then checked the   turn.

The river brought the   and another check from Manzano, and when Gross bet 40,000, Manzano mucked.

22 Players, One Bracelet: Day 3 Awaits

Steve Gross

Just 22 players remain from exactly 400 who entered Event #41: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha (Six-Handed), with Steve "gboro780" Gross leading all as the only player currently with more than half a million in his stack.

Gross is looking to add a best ever live score to his considerable achievements online and improve on a previous final table appearance in 2008 at a $1,000 no-limit hold'em rebuy event where he took ninth.

Gross will have some heady competition to contend with today, however, as Jesse Rockowitz, Salman Behbehani, and Alex Manzano are all within 10 big blinds of the leader, with Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Event #2: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em (Eight-Handed) winner Trevor Pope, and Sorel Mizzi all still in the hunt as well.

Speaking of Mizzi, the continued success of Canadian players at this year's WSOP forces us to look for remaining players who fly the Maple Leaf. Mizzi is joined by Joseph Leung and Lasell King as the three remaining Canada-based players in this one, all hoping to repeat last night's triumphs by Justin Oliver and Dan Idema who won Canada's eighth and ninth bracelets of the summer.

The action begins at 2 p.m., so be sure to return to see who among these last 22 grabs the gold. Meanwhile, let Lynn Gilmartin get you up to speed on all the happenings here at the WSOP with today's daily update:
