Huck Seed raised to 25,000 from the button, Howard Lederer called in the small blind and Johnny Chan folded from the big.

Both players checked the     flop, only for Seed to lead out for 20,000 on the   turn. Lederer raised to what I believe was 70,000, which triggered an all-in for 124,000 total from Seed.

Despite it being just 54,000 more, Lederer decided against the call and released his hand. As a result, a previously short-stacked Seed is now back up to over 250,000.

These players are taking small ball to a new level. In the last hand, Huck Seed limped his small blind, and Howard Lederer checked. It went check-check as usual on the   flop. The turn was the  , and Seed checked. This time, Lederer bet a whopping one big blind. Seed called the 10,000. The river was the  , and Seed checked again. Lederer checked behind, showing   for jacks and eights with an ace to take the pot.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 11:01 PM Local Time

Johnny Chan and Huck Seed saw a     flop with the former the preflop raiser. The two former Main Event Champions then proceeded to check down the   turn and   river, only to chop it up with    and    respectively.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 10:59 PM Local Time

Huck Seed raised to 25,000, and Howard Lederer 6xed to 150,000. That was enough to take it down.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 10:53 PM Local Time

Howard Lederer raised to 27,000, and Johnny Chan moved all in. Huck Seed got out of the way, and Lederer folded as well.

Howard Lederer limped in the small blind and Johnny Chan checked his option in the big. The flop rolled out    . Lederer led for 15,000 and Chan called. On the   turn, Lederer fired again, this time with 42,000 in his cannon, and Chan let it go. Lederer showed    for the open-ended straight flush draw.

Very few hands at the moment have significant action. Most are limped preflop and checked to showdown or check-folded. With such a steep payout structure, no one wants to risk a chip on a bluff when they could just get to showdown. It feels like it's become a game of cards rather than of poker.

In one hand, Huck Seed limped, and Howard Lederer checked his option. The flop came  , and both checked. They checked again after the   turn. Seed bet 15,000 when the river brought the  , and Lederer folded immediately.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 10:43 PM Local Time

Huck Seed raised to 25,000 on the button and Howard Lederer made the call from the small blind. The       board was checked right up to the river where Lederer took a stab for 41,000. After a brief dwell, Seed made the fold.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 10:36 PM Local Time

In the blink of an eye, we had another all in, Huck Seed in dominating shape with    against the    of Chan. Even the flush cards were covered.

Oohs on the     flop, but they soon dissipated on the   turn. An academic   later and Seed was back up to 205,000.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 10:31 PM Local Time

Johnny Chan raised on the button, and from the small blind, Huck Seed moved all in. Howard Lederer folded his big blind, and Chan announced a call. The crowd got to his feet as Chan had put himself at risk and wasn't in great shape.

Chan:

Seed:

The   flop didn't help Chan, but suddenly with the   on the turn, Chan's rail went insane. They quieted for a moment to sweat the   on the river, but it was safe for Chan, and they went back to cheering. Johnny doubled up to 360,000, leaving Seed with just under 100,000.

Time for a breather - back in 10 minutes.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 9:58 PM Local Time

Howard Lederer limped from the small blind, and Johnny Chan checked to get to the   flop. Lederer checked it, and Chan bet 25,000. Lederer check-raised him to 100,000, and Chan gave it up.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 9:54 PM Local Time

Johnny Chan and Huck Seed reached a flop of     where Chan led for 8,000. Seed flat called, before taking down the pot on the   turn with a bet of 21,000.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 9:41 PM Local Time

Moments later, Johnny Chan raised to 22,000 from the button and Howard Lederer announced all-in from the big blind for 201,000 more. After a brief tank, Chan threw in his hand into the muck.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 9:39 PM Local Time

Johnny Chan folded on the button, and Huck Seed moved all for 112,000. Howard Lederer snap-called in the big blind, and it was time for a high-stakes flip.

Seed:

Lederer:

The   flop missed Seed, and Chan and Lederer alternated calling for cards to give them a sweat. The   wasn't one of them. And the   on the river certainly wasn't what Lederer was looking for. With the timely ace-ball, Seed doubled up to 225,000. Lederer was left with 235,000.

Howard Lederer raised from the button, Johnny Chan called from the small blind, and Huck Seed folded his big.

Both players checked the     flop, but Chan was less hospitable on the   turn, leading out for 16,000. Lederer called.

On the   river, both players checked, allowing Chan to pick up the pot with "the nut no pair", as the T.D. called it,   , although Chan was quick to point out that he had a pair of aces.

Lederer, meanwhile, had been counterfeited with   .

Forget a knife, you could cut the tension with a toothpick here today, and especially as the big money jumps near.

One player who won't be taking as big a piece of the pie as he'd hoped is Joe Hachem, having just been eliminated courtesy of Howard Lederer.

It was The Professor who lit the first spark, making a standard raise from the button. Hachem reraised to 49,000 from the small blind, Lederer put him all in for 88,000 total and Hachem made the call.

Lederer:

Hachem:

"Ace of spades!" commanded the Aussie contingent. "One time... Actually, another time. One more time."

On this occasion, however, there were zero times, the board coming       to send the 2005 Champ hurtling towards the rail. The sugar, therefore, remained unpassed.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 8:56 PM Local Time

Barry Greenstein raised to 15,000, and Howard Lederer called from the big blind. The flop came  , and all the chips went into the middle. Greenstein was all in for 115,500 with   for both straight and flush draws. Lederer showed   for top pair and needed to dodge a slew of outs to knock out the Bear. The turn brought the   which looked good for Lederer, but in reality, two pair only took one out from Greenstein. The river was a flash of red, and the audience murmured, but it was the  , not the right card to rescue Greenstein on the river this time. He signed a copy of his book and handed it to Lederer, then left quietly for his exit interviews.

After returning from dinner as the short stack, Lederer is now the big chip leader with 340,000.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 8:43 PM Local Time

Joe Hachem raised to 15,000 (the standard raise, it would appear, for this level) and Huck Seed repopped it to 48,000 from the big blind. The 2005 World Champoon relinquished his hand.

Sunday, July 4, 2010 8:31 PM Local Time

Action folded to Howard Lederer in the small blind, and he limped in. Joe Hachem checked his option in the big, and they were heads up to an   flop. Lederer bet out 7,000, and Hachem called. Lederer fired another 16,000 after the   turn. Once again, Hachem made the call. The river brought the  , and this time, Lederer bet 45,000. Hachem took his time to contemplate such a serious bet, and the room went silent except for the sound of fireworks going off outside. Eventually, Hachem came up with a call. Lederer showed   for the rivered second-nut flush to take down the pot. He's all the way up to 185,000 now, while Hachem is down to 110,000.
