Rettenmaier Leads as 53 Advance from Day 1b

Marvin Rettenmaier

The 2012 World Series of Poker Europe Event #2: €1,100 No-Limit Hold'em continued on Sunday as 331 players turned out for Day 1b, the second of two starting flights. In just over nine levels of play, that number was reduced to just 53 with Marvin Rettenmaier and his stack of 69,950 leading the way.

Combined with Day 1a's 295 players, Event #2 drew a total of 626 entries and created a prize pool of €600,960, which will be distributed to the top 63 with €126,207 reserved for the winner. Tomorrow, the remaining 98 players from both starting flights will combined under the same roof for Day 2 action.

Back on Day 1a, Rettenmaier late registered for the tournament but didn't have much luck as he busted fairly quickly. He took advantage of the re-entry format and fired a second bullet, which proved to be a wise decision. In a hand earlier today, the board read when an unknown player had checked from early position and Rettenmaier took the opportunity to move all in. His opponent only had 1,550 behind and tank-called only to discover his was no good against the of Rettenmaier. It wasn't a huge pot, but it was reminiscent of how the German ran throughout the day.

Unfortunately not everyone was as fortunate as Rettenmaier. Andy Frankenberger, Chance Kornuth, Oliver Speidel, Vanessa Selbst and Michael Mizrachi were just a few of the players who re-entered and fell short for a second time. They were joined by Day 1b newbies Jennifer Tilly, David "ODB" Baker, Phil Hellmuth, Charlotte Van Brabander, Roland Israelashivili, Dan Shak and Brandon Cantu, just to name a few.

With that said, a few re-entries did make the most of their second chance including Dominik Nitsche, Joe Kuether, Tristan Wade, Erik Cajelais and John Monnette, all of whom finished toward the top of the Day 1b chip counts. They, along with John Tababtabia, Roger Hairabedian, Jean Paul Pasqualini, Bourcier de Carbon, and Gil George, will join the likes of Day 1a's Antonio Esfandiari, Mclean Karr and Antonin Teisseire on Monday for Day 2 action.

Big Slick for Wade

Tristan Wade opened for 850 from middle position only to have the small blind three-bet to 2,200. Wade opted to make the call and then bet 2,300 after his opponent checked the flop. The small blind thought for a few seconds before folding his hand.

"Queens?" Wade asked. His opponent, who didn't speak english, just smiled. "We could have gotten it in," Wade added as he flashed .

Nearing the End

There are approximately 12 minutes left in Level 8, and the plan is to skip the scheduled break, play ten minutes into Level 9, and then end at the same time as the Day 1a flight; in other words, players will be bagging and tagging in 20 minutes or so.

Double for the Canadian

We paid a visit to Table 18 in the back of the room and saw the dealer counting out a bunch of chips. When we arrived, Erik Cajelais had laid out in front of him on a board. His opponent held the inferior and the dealer was counting down his stack to pay out Cajelais. From what we could tell, the two had built the pot on both the flop and turn, before Cajelais got his last 4,000 or so in on the river.

Tabatabai Doubles; Baker Cooked

We arrived at the table just in time to see John Tabatabai being pushed a pot. We're not sure when the money went in, but we can confirm that Tabatabai just double holding on a against the of his unknown opponent. Based on the cards, we're guessing the money went in on the flop.

Meanwhile, David "ODB" Baker, who has been nursing a short stack much of the evening, has been eliminated from the tournament.

Kollman Succumbs

Erich Kollmann

A short-stacked Erich Kollmann moved all in for 575 from the cutoff and received calls from Marc Barller in the small and the player in the big blind. Both those players proceeded to check it down as the board ran out , and Bariller showed . The big blind then showed for the win as Kollmann simply mucked.

Running Aces Crush Tabatabai's Flopped Set of Kings

With around 11,000 in the pot and a board reading , Matmar Koudier fired out 4,500 from the big blind and was eventually called by John Tabatabai in the hijack. Koudier tabled for aces full of eights, which beat Tabatabai's kings full of aces.

Curious George Sends Some to Carbon

We happened upon Table 10 just as the dealer was pushing Bourcier de Carbon a sizable pot. From what we could piece together, there was already quite a bit in the middle when de Carbon bet 3,000 on the river with a board reading and received a call from Gil George. De Carbon tabled for a full house, and George shook his head before sending his cards to the muck.

Happy John Monnette

John Monnette

Yesterday John Monnette had a short and not-so-sweet day after busting in the first level. Monnette, who won a bracelet this summer and is contending for Player of the Year, opted to fire a second bullet here on Day 2 and it's paying dividends thus far.

In a recent hand, Monnette and a player in the small blind got the money in on a flop with the latter being all in for around 6,500. The small blind held and was in dire straits against the of Monnette. The turn ended any suspense as Monnette improved to a boat, which left the small blind drawing dead, and he was pushed the pot after the meaningless was put out on the river. Monnette is now up to 30,000.

One for de Carbon

Action folded around to Bourcier de Carbon on the button and he put in a raise to 775, which Jean Paul Pasqualini called from the big blind. The flop saw Pasqualini lead out for a modest 400, de Carbon call, and the turn.

This time Pasqualini checked, and de Carbon sprung to life with a bet of 1,000. It proved enough to get the job done as Pasqualini gave up on the hand.

"It Always Happens Right Before Dinner"

After a player raised to 600 from middle position, a short-stacked Noah Schwartz moved all in from the big blind for 3,575. A call was made and the cards were turned up:

Showdown
Schwartz:
Opponent:

It was a race, but Schwartz needed to improve to stay alive. He didn't like what he saw on the flop and stood from his seat, which brought about the turn. "It always happens right before dinner," Schwartz said to the guy next to him. Sure enough, the blanked on the river and Schwartz was eliminated just 15 minutes shy of the dinner break.

Meanwhile, Jean Paul Pasqualini is gaining momentum over at Table 11 and has built his stack up to 18,000.

No Women Remaining

We decided to take a stroll through the tournament floor and see how many women were remaining in the field. Much to our surprise, of the approximately 84 players left, none of them are women. Given no women advanced from Day 1a, the only ladies left in the tournament are the .
