Josh Turner
Tunica, Miss. (25 January 2016) – Josh Turner won his third career World Series of Poker Circuit ring Sunday night. He finished in first place in Event #4: $365 No-Limit Hold’em Re-entry at the WSOP Circuit at the Horseshoe Tunica. His first place prize was $71,665, so far the largest payout of any tournament at this Circuit stop.
Turner was supremely confident in the final hours of the tournament. As the last 10 players took their seats at the final table, he turned to a friend who was sitting nearby to cheer him on and told him, “I’m going to win this thing.” At the time, Turner held the chip lead, so victory likely seemed within his grasp. But he held the same attitude earlier in the event as well. He said after the tournament, “I think when we got down to three tables, I was pretty in control, and I thought I was going to win from that point on.”
This is the second largest live tournament cash of Turner’s career. His biggest score ($136,945) came when he won his second ring, in the Main Event at the St. Louis Circuit stop about a year ago. In that tournament, too, Turner held a chip lead to start the final table, and used it to his advantage. “That’s part of my major game plan,” he said. “On the money bubble and even before that, I like to apply a little pressure and set myself up so when we’re at the final table I have the best possible chance to win.”
Confidence wasn’t Turner’s only advantage. He also has more experience than most of the final table. The only other final-table player who has close to Turner’s tournament results is Marshall White, who eventually finished in fourth place ($24,632). White and Turner both have 24 WSOP Circuit cashes, and when this tournament began, they both had two rings.
The tournament featured three starting flights. The first began at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22. The other two began on Saturday. The three flights garnered a total of 1,346 entries, creating prize pool of $403,800. The top 135 players made the money.
On Sunday, January 24, players from all three starting flights who survived Day 1 returned to play in a combined field. In all, 158 players advanced to Day 2, and they resumed play at noon. They reached the final table at about 10:45 p.m., and Turner secured his victory at about 3:45 a.m.
