James Calderaro at a prior WSOP event

Yesterday, James Calderaro and three of his buddies bought in to this tournament with only seconds to spare. With this being the Extended Play Tournament, that means that anyone had up until 11:45p.m. last night to buy in. Only Calderaro made it deep into Day Two as two of his friends were eliminated yesterday, and one earlier today.

This evening, right before the bubble burst, Calderaro is involved in a HUGE hand that could have knocked him out just before the money. As told by Calderaro and his opponent in the hand, Levi Vedat, Calderaro was sitting with right about 24,000 and there was a raise, a reraise, a shove by Calderaro, and a snap-call by Levi Vedat. Calderaro shows    while Vedat shows   .

Vedat flops an   to give him a set and, according to Calderaro, he started to stand up which he never has done before in a tournament. "I always stay in my chair until the river, but I thought I was done." Then a   comes on the turn and the case   comes on the river giving Calderaro quads to keep his tournament alive.

Calderaro is now in the money and sitting with right about 80,000 in chips. At one point last night, Calderaro picked up aces against 2009 WSOP Main Event winner Joe Cada to knock him out.

Calderaro's play is strong but sometimes it is also good to have a little luck on your side!

James Calderaro - 80,000

Noted poker author, James McManus, and Brazilian poker pro Andre Akkari are among the flurry of eliminations that have taken place since the bubble burst. For McManus this was his 13th WSOP cash with his most noted cash being his fifth place finish as the 2000 WSOP Main Event. That finish was part of the inspiration for his best-selling book "Positively Fifth Street." Akkari, a bracelet winner, cashed for the 16th time.

With two players to bust before the remaining field is on the bubble one player opens and Joshua Reynolds three-bets to 5,300 from the button. Jeff Rassmussenn in the small blind moves all in for 14,500 and when the original raiser folds the decision is on Reynolds who has 57,000 behind.

That decision takes close to ten minute while the chat goes back and forth between Rassmussenn, Reynolds and the rest of the table. Rassmussenn seems relaxed even though he could be at risk of busting empty handed and Reynolds is agonising over the price he is getting.

No one looks like calling the clock and as the minutes tick by the board counts off another two eliminations until they are on the stone bubble. Eventually Reynolds folds and shows a single card, the  . Rassmussenn shows his   .
