Shashank Jain Leads the Pack in Event #58: $1,500 Mixed-Max No-Limit Hold'em

Shashank Jain

There were 1,475 players that made their way down to the Rio for Event #58: $1,500 Mixed-Max No-Limit Hold'em on Monday. When play ended shortly after midnight on Tuesday, it was Shashank Jain sitting atop the chip counts with an impressive 130,300. He's followed closely by Brandon Cantu, who ended the day with 122,300. Cantu didn't sit down until after the dinner break and was able to run up the 4,500-chip starting stack to nearly 30 times that amount in just four levels of play.

Other stacks topping the 100,000 mark included Joshua Schoonover (114,500), Rupesh Pattni (112,800), Jared Jaffee (109,300), Jared Vengrin (104,200), and Anthony Diotte (100,000). Moving on with those five are notables such as Allen Cunningham (48,600), James McManus (48,200), Dan Kelly (47,000), Jeff Gross (35,300), James Woods (33,500), Jason Somerville (24,000), Gavin Smith (22,900), Matt Waxman (19,200), Jason Koon (14,700), and Erick Lindgren (12,800). Those players make up part of the 181 that will return for Day 2 in an attempt to make the money.

A total of 162 will cash, so the bubble should hit soon after play resumes. Among those who took a shot, but failed to bag any chips were Annette Obrestad, Tony Cousineau, Alex Queen, Greg Raymer, Mike Sowers, Lee Childs, Jerry Yang, Chris Moorman, Huck Seed, Todd Terry, Kevin Saul, Dan O'Brien, Dwyte Pilgrim, Dan Shak, and Carlos Mortensen.

Cards will be back in the air at 1 p.m. local time in the Amazon Room and players will be playing six-handed for the entire day. PokerNews will be there to answer all the pertinent questions like who makes the money, who comes up short, and who will move on to the final day of play, so tune in to follow along with all the exciting mixed-max poker action.

PokerNews Podcast Episode #231: Who Wants to be a Millionaire? feat. Sam Trickett

Sam Trickett

Thanks to a little PokerNews Podcast run good, Jason Somerville shipped a million dollars on Friday, chopping the Bellagio $100K event with Jason Mercier, Dan Smith and Tom Marchese. The crew discusses that score, then looks at the $1 Million BIG ONE for ONE DROP with the Day 1 chip leader; Sam Trickett.

Getting It In Bad

We got to the table and saw a pile of chips being pushed Jason Somerville's way with his hand still face up in front of him -   . His opponent's hand was still showing as well -   . The board read       meaning Somerville's ace-high flush had bested the Broadway straight of his opponent.

"Make sure you write that Somerville got it in bad," said Somerville.

"Again."

Somerville was up to 20,000 after getting it in bad and hitting the winning hand.

Liv Boeree Chipping Up

We got to the table with the flop showing    . Liv Boeree checked from the small blind, the player in the big blind checked, and a player in middle position bet 1,350. Boeree made the call and the player in the big blind folded.

The turn was the   and both players checked. Boeree led out for 3,500 on the   river and her opponent quickly folded to give her the pot. That moved Boeree up to over 20,000 for the day as she was sitting with 20,500 after that hand.

Waxman Makes a Nice Call

We get to the table with a board of       and Matt Waxman facing a bet of 3,000. "Five," he asked his opponent, who said nothing and sat there motionless. Waxman continued to study him, a call collected in his left hand. Finally, the WSOP bracelet winner tossed the chips into the middle and his opponent turned over    for a busted straight draw. Waxman turned over    and rubbed the cards back and forth against the table to show the dealer he had the better hand. The dealer didn't quite seem to understand what had happened so Waxman had to tell her that his ace high was good. She pushed the pot to Waxman who moved to 14,200 in chips after the hand.
