Mike Cordell Wins PLO Event at Hard Rock Tulsa

Mike Cordell

Tulsa, Okla. (27 March 2017) — Mike Cordell is in the midst of an amazing run of success in World Series of Poker tournaments. He won his first WSOP bracelet last June, and has now added his second career WSOP Circuit ring by winning the pot-limit Omaha event at the Hard Rock Tulsa. He earns $14,661 for the victory.

Cordell’s streak is even more impressive considering he has just returned from an extended hiatus from tournament poker. After his father passed away in 2010, Cordell became caretaker for his mother, who was blind. And of course, he traveled for poker very little. She passed away last spring and just a few weeks later Cordell won his WSOP bracelet.

He attributes his quick transition back into the tournament poker world to the fact that he’s been playing the game for most of his life. “I have a lot of experience,” he said after the event. “Even though I was off, I still was playing home games and such. And I’ve been playing since I was about 19 years old, so for about 27 years.”

Cordell’s strategy for the final table boiled down to two points: patience and timing. “The thing about PLO tournaments is you just have to be patient,” he said “Maybe take some flops and hopefully flop big. When I got heads up, I ramped in up a little bit and applied a little more pressure. But mostly, that was just my plan, just to stay patient so I could get in cheap and see a flop.”

Cordell won his first Circuit ring in 2008, a few years before he took time away from tournament poker. And if the past year since he’s returned is any indication, he won’t have to wait another nine years for the next one.
