Curtis Day wins the Coconut Creek High Roller for $73,500
Six hours is all it took for businessman and recreational poker player Curtis Daye to win the $3,250 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller on Day 2 at Coconut Creek for his first ever World Series of Poker cash and biggest career win for $73,500. The Jamaican native topped a field of 70 entries across two days to seal the deal and win his first ring. "This is my first Circuit event and I really appreciate that" said a proud Daye.
In the final hand, Daye got his chips in the middle with an almost 7-to-1 chip lead with ace-jack of hearts, up against WSOP bracelet and Circuit champion Phil Hui's ace-queen. Both players hit their kickers on the flop, but it was Daye who rivered another jack to eliminate a tough competitor in Hui. For his efforts, Hui took home $45,421, bringing his overall career cashes to an impressive $1.6 million.
"I started yesterday really pretty steady, I must say. And I came this morning, came up today, with good intentions. And it was a little bit challenging - the guys played well, but in the end I had my focus and the goal in mind. I just called my girlfriend and I was like, I need a ring and I was determined and I did it" laughed Daye.
Day 2 began with 24 entries, 19 of which played on Day 1 combined with five Day 2 entries. In less than an hour, the field was down to the final two tables and closing in on the elusive final table and money bubble. Nine-time WSOP Circuit champion Martin Ryan came in to the day with a healthy stack but found himself on the rail in the first hour of the day. On the other end of the spectrum was Jake Schwartz who bought in on Day 2 and spun it up quickly to put himself in a good position to cash. Unfortunately for him, his kings were cracked and he was eliminated in 11th, just shy of the final table.
After the elimination of Randy Humphries, the final table of nine was set. Jonathan Kramer came in with the lead, with Curtis Daye and Phil Hui hot on his heels. Five-time ring winner Jeff Trudeau was the first to be eliminated, putting the remaining players on the direct money bubble. A short-stacked Corey Burbick found himself on the ropes with ace-nine suited, but was unable to improve against Kramer's ace-ten suited and was the bubble boy for this event. The remaining 7 players guaranteed themselves at least $10,790.
Once the bubble burst, Sam Ganzfried had his kings cracked by Kramer's pocket jacks after a jack hit the river, and he was followed by Chad Eveslage who had his aces cracked by the two pair of Daye. Hui went on to put his foot on the gas and crossed the million-chip mark before Anthony Utnage ran his ace-queen of diamonds into Kramer's two black aces, seeing him eliminated in 5th place. Soon after, the reigning champion Dominique Mosley was unable to win a flip with pocket fives and fell in fourth place for $21,319.
Three-handed play went on for a short while before Kramer was unable to get a bluff through. He check-raised the turn with ace-high and moved all in on the river against Daye. Unfortunately for him, Daye rivered trips and Kramer had to settle for third place and a tidy sum of $30,116.
