Johnny Landreth - Winner of the High Roller

Johnny Landreth added another accolade to his WSOP Circuit career Friday night. He won the High Roller event at Harrah’s New Orleans, earning his second Circuit ring and $88,199.

Landreth bested a stacked field that included fellow ring winners, WSOP bracelet winners, and other tough competitors. Joe Kuether – winner of the High Roller event at Planet Hollywood in November – finished in sixth place ($15,767). Former November Niner John Dolan finished in ninth place ($7,573). And bracelet winner Larry Wright finished in fifth ($20,886).

Landreth had especially high praise for second-place finisher Timothy “T.K.” Miles. “T.K is a guy I’ve played heads-up with before. He’s a real good player. He’s got credentials and I’ve got to give him a lot of respect.”

The tournament started with 97 entrants on Thursday. After 12 Levels of poker, 32 advanced to Day 2. Players who failed to make the second day include WSOP bracelet winners Philip Hui and Cord Garcia, as well as Allen Kessler, Viet Vo, Ray Henson, and Nipun Java.

Late Registration was open until the start of Day 2, and Erik Sagstrom took advantage of that to register Friday morning. His entry brought the field size up to 98 players. Before the tournament reached the money bubble, 20 players were eliminated, including Rex Clinkscales, Josh Mancuso, and Aaron Massey. After a lengthy bubble that lasted about an hour, seven-time Circuit ring winner Maurice Hawkins was eliminated in 13th place, just barely missing out on the money.

It was another five and half hours before Landreth secured his victory. The pace of play was slow for much of the final table, especially once there only three players left. Landreth entered three-handed play with a substantial chip deficit, but successfully clawed his way back. And after Jeff Bromberger was eliminated in third place, it was just a matter of minutes before Landreth busted Miles to take the ring.

Landreth describes himself as a “feel” player, listening to his gut for his decision. “Well, I just kind of play by the seat of my britches,” he said. “I stayed low stacked just about the whole tournament. Especially when we got three-handed. But I felt I got into the right spots and it all worked out.”

This is Landreth’s second WSOP Circuit ring, and they were both big events. He won his first last year in the Main Event at the Horseshoe Tunica.

This is the seventh and final High Roller tournament on the 2015-2016 WSOP Circuit. This year marked the first time since 2011 the Circuit has featured events with a buy-in higher than $1,675. Here's a look at all the High Roller events and winners from this season.
