When David Singer woke up Wednesday morning he knew that he would be making an addition to his life; maybe even two. Singer entered the final table of Event #3 ($1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em) with the second smallest chip stack and the possibility of a bracelet seemed remote. On the rail Singer’s fiancé was ready to give birth at any moment. Wednesday was the due date for the couple’s first child.
Singer started the day as the second shortest chip stack, but as the day progressed he began to chip up and it wasn’t long before he found himself heads-up with Jacobo Fernandez-Hernandez. The two played heads-up for five hours and 17 minutes – including breaks. Luckily for Singer his wife never went into labor.
“The moment she goes into labor, I am quitting the tournament," Singer said. "I don't care even if I am playing heads-up for the (gold bracelet)."
Thankfully for Singer the child had the good sense to hold on a little longer. On a board showing 7d 5s 3d 6c Singer re-raised Fernandez-Hernandez all-in. Fernandez-Hernandez called and revealed 7c 3h for two pair while Singer tabled Qs 4s for a straight. The river bricked and Singer had won his first WSOP bracelet after making eight other WSOP final tables – including the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event in 2006 and 2007 – since 1989.
Remarkably Singer pulled off a rare feat with his performance n this event. On Tuesday Singer cashed in Event #2 ($1,500 No Limit Hold’em) before moving over to his seat in Event #3 where he proceeded to make the money, cashing twice in the same day.
“I started out this tournament not really caring much about it. I was (registered) in the other tournament ($1,500 No-Limit Hold'em) and I cashed in that one. I was running back and forth between tables at the start of this one, and obviously it worked out.”
“This really feels great. I've waited for this for a very long time.”
Singer earned $214,122, or enough to buy 935,000 pairs of Huggies for his baby, for besting the 713-player field. Fernandez-Hernandez’s runner-up performance paid $136,644. For a complete listing of all results visit WSOP Event #3 Results.
