About Council Bluffs
Council Bluffs was literally named after a meeting, or a council held between the indigenous Otoe tribe and Lewis and Clark on the forested bluffs of southwest Iowa in 1804. Council Bluffs holds a history rich in Americana and served as a major junction for both Mormons traveling to Utah and prospectors journeying west during the California Gold Rush.
In the 1860's, the first transcontinental railroad was built, connecting Council Bluffs and Alameda, CA. The city would eventually become a major railroad hub, its growth and character shaped by the industry. The railroad along with its location in the heart of America's breadbasket made Council Bluffs the ideal location as one of the nation's largest storage centers for wheat and other grain. Bluffs is in Pottawattamie County and lies on the east bank of the Missouri River across from Omaha, Nebraska less than ten miles away. Greyhound racing was introduced to Council Bluffs in the 1940's and holds a place in the city's history to this day.
About Horseshoe Council Bluffs
Originally opened in January 1985, Bluffs Run was a 5/16th of a mile greyhound track and three-story clubhouse. In June of 1993, the city council approved construction to expand the racetrack to include a casino. In 1995, Bluff's Run Casino was opened March 15th 1995 and only offered slot machines. In 2001 Harrah's purchased Bluffs Run and in 2005 began an $85 million dollar expansion of the property and re-opened it as Horseshoe Council Bluffs. Bluff's Run continues to operate adjacent to the Horseshoe with live racing six days a week.
